I have a Penguin 125 bio-wheel that has never ran as smoothly as when it was new, until now.
The bio-wheel would slow down and eventually stop. I would do the maintenance that manufacturer suggests (clean the intake tube ,impeller and its housing, clean or replace the filter cartridge and lightly rinse the wheel its self) and after all of that work the wheel would slow and stop.
I was thinking of getting rid of it all together until I noticed that the bearing were actually touching the wheel and making a very faint rubbing/grinding noise. I took the wheel and bearing of the bracket and filed down the ends of the bearings (approximately 1/32nd on each) put the wheel and bearings on the bracket and placed them back on the filter housing.
Since doing so it has never stopped and only slows down when the water flow is impeded (clogged cartridge, intake tube, impeller or its housing ) it runs now like it did when I first got it.
For those of you with stopped or slowing down Penguin wheels I hope this helps, it might even work with the Emperor.

Bio wheels sometimes slow down but should never stop. The bacteria should be building equally on the entire wheel if its running correctly. The wheel is ment to turn, thus dispersing the bacteria evenly through out the wheel. If the wheel stops or slows down the wheel is unbalanced, meaning something is impeding its rotational momentum. The whole idea behind the wheel is to provide the bacteria with the most air to water surface ratio. To say that it stops, is saying that the bacteria in the upper portion will be denied the water it needs, whilst the lower portion is lacking the air it needs. Wheels are meant to go around, unless a braking power is applied. If bearings slow the garvitatiational pull of the wheel, the entire theroy of this wheel is negated.

SOME UV OS LEYK TO SOWND SMARRT.

I've got the "cold bird 303" and have the same problem, only when I neglect to clean the tank as frequently as I should.

My Bio-Wheels stop when the water level gets too low.

Raise it up and they always start again.

Why must some people make a comment that has no relation to the subject at hand.
I come to forums to get new ideas and to give new ideas and to express what I have learned in this hobby. (ivy league professor?) no I am not, but if you cant follow what I am saying, then get offended at all cost.
I ask and some times tell about MY experiances.
To me this place is to get and give info, not to make Pleco Poop feel better about his/her lack of .....(fill in the blank).....

I have two 330s on my 75 gallon tank. My bio wheels are always stopping. I'm missing a couple of the blue ends. I bought another bio wheel but it didn't come with the blue ends. Where can I get them? Any other ideas?
