I read on somewhere in the internet that Black Mystery Snails will eat algae. I was basically curious as to how much one can/will/would eat, and if they're alright to add to a 29 gal. tank with 2 angelfish, a synodontus eupturis, a glass catfish, and a molly??

thanks for any help!

they do eat algae pretty well, and due to their size they are much less likely to be bothered by other fish. you could probably add 2 or 3, or an assortment of colors. if they breed and you don't want babies, just get rid of the eggs. they will also not eat any plants that you have unless the leaves are dying. then they will trim the unhealthy parts.

Mystery Snails are great eaters, mine eat all the time. How much do they clean the tank is another question. I have found that ottos are actually better at cleaning up a tank the snails. But Dont get me wrong i love my Mystery Snails and they actually come in a variety of colors not just black or gold. I have an ivory/white and a blue/gray color. They make a great addition to a community tank and will help clean up.

It would be fine to add, but I have to caution you that they are not an algae fix. They won't magically clean your tank. They're more for an aesthetic value than a practical one. It won't hurt anything to add to your tank, but if you don't really want one (other than for cleaning) I'd pass.

They're quite fun creatures. Mine used to love frozen bloodworms. He'd suck them out of the tube when I was feeding the frogs.

I've recently decided I really miss "Herbie" and am going to get more:)

they sound pretty interesting, plus it would be something different than fish...do i need to feed them though, or will they get their fill on algae? If so, how should i feed them the blood worms or whatever else??

Mine usually appreciate a piece of carrot, zucchini, or spinach. Blanch it to make it sink and just drop it in - it won't take long before they're congregating on it.

I've hardly ever had a snail that would touch my algae, though...some even seemed to prefer my (healthy) plants.

Yah, ideally, you should supplement them. They are quite big.
