blacklight

What about night lights like reptiles use? I used em when I had snakes. Supposed to act like a moon light type experience. Would fish react the same for these lights, if it was slowly introduced and actually was on in a moon type pattern? Or is that light bad for fish too. Something I wouldn't mind trying unless it;s bad light for them.

my fish only seem to go crazy for a few minutes when iturn it on, then they calm down. and it makes my tank look soo fricken cool :Di think i'll continue to use it unless i see that my fish start to look unhealthy

My thought was to turn it on during the moon cycle. I can set up a staggered time cycle to mock the moon and it's actual cycle. (I'm an electrical engineer, I have the technology.) But if the light is not healthy, I'll kill the idea. I know it was a big reason my python grew so big.

This doesn't have to be so complicated. Oscar83, if you like the look, then rock on and keep using your black light (may I suggest the blue G-I-T-D plants from wal-mart ;) ). Don't worry about replicating the moons cycle or any other nonsense like that. Trust me, the light won't hurt the fish in any way, unless they freak out too much and slam against the glass, but, mine never did. Like I said I posted about this a while back and a very informed forum member assured me the light was safe. Think about it, do people in those "Glow!" stores at Universal City Walk go blind? No.

Good luck with your tank, and don't forget to post some pics.:D

thanks socal, thats what i wanted to hear, heh. i just gotta get a bigger light, or another one, so it lights up the whole tank not just the center of it (i have a 24" bulb on a 48" tank). dont worry, i'll post some pics as soon as i can get a digital camera. maybe i'll have to steal my brothers... mmwhahahaha

I'm gonna get a couple blacklight bulbs. I have a strip that is not in use. I was using it for my plants, but gave up on it after my fish kept tearing them apart. I'll set the black light for the first few hours after the main light goes out and see what happens. I bet my albino Oscars will look bit**in in that light. I'll take some pics when I get it up and running. I can't wait.
