blacklight

Red light, similar to the blue rope light, might be a better option. Fish don't see as well in the red spectrum, so most don't even notice it and won't panic when it comes on. I will allo you to see the fish moving around fairly well. If the fish react, it's a pretty good indicator that they do in fact detect the light.

Comparing humans under black light is really not fair--humans can blink, while fish can not.

I use a few blue LEDs in my 29 for a moonlight. the fish don't even notice it but it allows enough light for me to see into the tank a bit. They draw a small enough amount of power that I just leave it on all the time. The main lights drown them out when they're on.

I posted how I made them on the FW DIY forum before.

That's true, but what about tanks with metal hallides? Those are super bright and the fish still can't blink. That's a topic for debate. Just because blacklights are a relatively foreign light to use on tanks, there's a lot of unecessary prejudice against them,
and a lot of "opinions" passed off as fact. But I guess that's the way it will always be  .

MH can cause problems, which is why they shouldn't be used unless you dealing with a tank that requires lots of light, like deep planted tanks or reef setups. Even then, it's always advisable to provide caves and overhangs for fish to duck under.

I wasn't saying the black light caused any problem, anyway. Just that comparing fish to humans is not accurate.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to attack you or anything, I was just pointing out that some people state their opinions as fact.

But saying that a comparison between fish and humans is not accurate based on the fact that we can blink and they can't.....that's not exactly accurate either.

I wouldn't use a blacklight, just knowing how light changes affect and can stress a fish. Prolonged exposure to UV is damaging, especially to the eyes. It sounds to much like you are putting your interest above your fish.

Even with your eyelids taped open?

Yeah. I like black lights. And also do fish really sleep? They might rest for a bit but not sleep really or am I wrong.
