I'm looking to get one of these critters for a 30 gallon tank.

Whats your recommendation? Blenny? Goby? My girl loves seeing these fish sit on the rocks and sand and move around. Do they burrow? Are they Hardy?

Any experience is gladly welcome!

For me, its gotta be a watchman goby and a pistol shrimp..buy them together and the sybiotic relationship going..The shrimp will create a home for the goby and spend all its time keeping the home gleaming..Goby's are quite a hardy fish aswell as blenny's...

That is my preference anyways...

Thanks Niko.
That sounds awesome. I'd like to see that!

Are Pistol shrimp dangerous to any other tankmates or shrimp? I mean they carry a pistol around....ok bad joke. but seriously are they?

Pistol shrimp can be a threat to your snail and hermit population once they get some size to them.

IMO, there's a lot more easy to find gobies that are more interesting than the easy to find blennies. If it was me, I'd go with a goby.

Well, if you search on youtube.com there are loads of video clips of the goby/shrimp pearing working together..

Pistol shrimps are not dangerous. If anything, it may pose a threat to shrimp smaller than itself....90% of their time is taken up with house keeping while the goby sits on close rock or crevice and watches the world go by and when the house work is done, they will go back and perch in the opening to their cave or tunnel...

So cool...

hey that is neat.

does it matter what kind of a goby you use?

Are the pistol shrimp noisy? I'm reading about them and I keep finding that they are loud clickers.

I was only planning on having 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sand in my tank....... hmmmm that may not be good.

Yes, they do make a clicking noise, very often mistaken for a mantis shrimp...What you could do is buy a small bag of large grain size sand from your lfs and put it in one corner or area, they are very inteligent and it will find it mate..

Pistol shrimps are not dangerous.

I've watched a 2" long tiger pistol shrimp pick off snails and small hermits that were in its tank at the LFS. You could tell from his burrow that he was killing some of them for their shell and then used the shells in his burrow construction. It was definitely a pistol shrimp (vs. being a mantis, which is basically an assassin).

There are different gobies that will pair with a shrimp, watchman gobies are just one type. They are generally referred to as "shrimp gobies," which should help with your searches online.
