blood parrot cichlid mating a firemouth cichlid.

cool thanks I can't open it at work........I'll have to wait till I get home

"This is because they aren't a true species, but rather a cross between a Severum and a Red Devil. This often renders the fish infertile.Differences in sexes are unknown. While Blood Parrots will spawn in the usual cichlid way, they usually cannot produce fertile eggs, thus rarely ever produce fry. "AC

but maybe some can

That was from off of this website not me. I personally don't like them but I've had them.....my mom likes them.....Also if you cross a BP with a convict I think they call it something like a Jelly bean blood parrot.......I just didn't know they can have babies.........I guess most females are fertile males are not all ways. Thanks for all of the info

undefinedhello again, well, my blood parrot has been steadily laying eggs now almost every week. she makes a cave, moves all the rocks and a few days later lays a gazillion eggs! then she and my firemouth proceed to eat them all...... they both keep all other fish away from where their cave is at the present time (it moves to a new spot every time). any idea how long this will continue? should the bp and the firemouth be separated from the rest of the tank? in the tank i also have a Red Pacu, a Harlequin lobster, a tiretrack(?) eel, an albino cory, a plocostomus (?), a tiger barb and a jewel cichlid. it's a 55 gal. tank. thanks.

"any idea how long this will continue?"

untill they get it right and the eggs hatch, but it will start up again after the fry grow up a bit. OR when you put them in different tanks then in will stop.

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark but I'd say you tank is WAY overstocked. The Pacu alone will need 200+ Gallons to be happy.

Haggisman again thank you for all of the information

Are you sure the parents ate the eggs? Pleco and lobster are night scavenger and they will consume the eggs at night when the parents are sleeping. Firemouth and BP should be able produce fertile eggs. Only when two BP paried up their recessive genes that the eggs produced are infertile. Cichlid hybrids, unlike mammal hybrids, are typically fertile.

If there not killing other fish don't move them. consider it free food.

Most cichlids will eat their eggs the first few times, and even many more times but generally after a while they will get the hang of it and take care of the eggs and raise the fry. The cross that did produce these fish was a midas and severum, so saying that they won't produce fry, though it may very well be true, isn't a responsible statement. It is fully possible that these fish may produce fry, just not very likely at all. After all who ever thought that a severum and midas would spawn together, let alone produce viable fry.
