Hi all, does this look like fin rot to you? atm im treating it as fin rot with melafix and pimafix, but reading around the internet it seems these 2 treatments have variable results.

Im not sure how my fish caught it as i do a 40% water change every week. he lives in a 120x36x30cm tank with some bristlenoses. the only thing i can think of was i was a couple of days late changing the water and that the bristlenose (2 adults, 30 babies) are growing up more and therefore mucking up the water more.

The tops of his fins are disappearing and at the end of each barb there is a white nodule, it doesnt look fungus-ey, it looks more like an ulcer or inflamed lymph node. His fins are inflamed as well. Ive got some pictures below. Its also spreading to his pelvic and anal fins.

Ive had him for almost 4years please help!
Does it look like fin rot to you? Is it in a serious stage? what treatments have you used that have been effective?

This looks like what I am treating my Jaguar Chiclid (spelling not right I am sure)for.Mine has a growth of some kind, too. I am into week 2 and there is signs of her improving. So maybe just treatment and time will work. And water changes. Just my thoughts on the issue. Becky

Although had for 4 yrs, check the water and correct if necessary before attemting any treatments.
Perhaps histroy of water conditions could assist in determining why/how/what?

PROVIDED YOU ARE NOT MINOR & If you have any Bacintracin Ointment, try smear on the tip of affected fins.

Be careful! Dont get poked by infected rays.

Hope all goes well.

Yep i've checked the parameters, they are all fine and i've also put in some salt.
Do you think it worth while if i buy some maracyn II? That is, if it IS fin rot.

Becky- what medicine are you giving your jaguar?

Cerianthus -Bacintracin Ointment, is this something you have used personally? is it safe for fish? will it affect other fish in the tank? i looked it up and it says it is used for positive gram stain bacteria and i thought fin rot is negative gram?

ahhh freaking out! Thanks for your help though!

Ah, U R in Australia. Congrats, 6-0 over Uzbec.

If memory serves Bacitracin may not be avail there. Consult with local Pharmacist for assistance in obtaining ointment which will work on both Gram Pos/Neg as Bacitraicn does. I dont think average person have to determine if minor cuts should receive Gram Pos or Neg Ointment.

I dont know if this is just fin rot or combo of few. Difficult to pinpoint without lab facilities and perhaps even necropsy which defeats the whole purpose of trying to keep fish alive.
I have used it on even worst case of infections, not just fin rot.

Ive been using Ointments for few decades with high success rate, most of time better than dosing antibiotics into water. Dont apply too much as water and oil dont mix well. Any excess will just fall off, becoming added pollutants. Provided you just smear on affected area, will not cause problems to tankmates. at least I never exp/observed.

CAUTION: DONT GET POKED BY DORSAL RAYS!!!!
If Minor, have adults apply ointment.

Hope all goes well!

Thanks for all the advice Cerianthus, darn i wish i read this 10 minutes earlier! I just purchased maracyn/marcyn II for an arm and a leg to ship to australia (Bacitracin is so much cheaper!)

oh and btw lol im an adult and i will take care not to get poked :P

thanks again

fin rot

I have been treating with melafix. She is looking pretty bad, not eating, swimming little. She has strings coming off her body, looks to be blind in one eye. Her left fin is now just a stump. She is an older fish.I got her from a friend about 4 or 5 years ago and not sure how long he had her. I am attaching a photo, although not the best but I think you can get the idea. She has just developed on her head(looks white) but maybe missing scales? I don't want to keep treating her if she is not going to get better. I will do what is best for her :(
