Blue bonded pads or quilt batting?

I think I need to hook up with some of this stuff you speak of :)

$10.00 for ANYTHING in Manhattan seems like a good price....unless we're not talking about New York.

New York it is and they also sell huge bags of poly floss for $5.00 each. My mechanical filtration worries are over.:) I also have 1872 sq" of blue bonded pads, 12 of these http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13371 8 100ml Purigen bags, 2 large bags of floss. I have 4 filters on 2 tanks. 1 Emperor, 2 Aqueons 55 and one Whisper ex45. I am waiting for a "sale" because I want to get one more Emperor.

I use both at the same time in my Magnum 350. The blue bonded pad is much courser so I use it on the outside of the circular basket. The batten is much finer and I sue it under the blue bonded layer after the blue bond has done it work. But without a doubt the batten catches way more then the blue bonded alone. Working together they do a great job.

Below a pic of dirty batten second layer removed from underneath the blue bonded layer which did not catch the dirt as well. I have pulled out batten layers that were so black and heavy that they were more like a mud layer then filter LOL.

Below you can see the blue bonded circular layer on the outside of the MAG350 basket with a batten cut to fit later on the inside. This is made by turning the blue bonded sock inside out first, cutting a section of batten to the same size and raping it around the "inside-out" blue bond, then holding them together as one piece turn them both "right-side-in". Now you just slip both over the basket like slipping on a turtle-neck sweater. You will also notice that I use Polyester wool to fill in voids between carbon bags to prevent bypass around the carbon using a chop stick to poke it in place here and there. Polyester wool is great for voids but not good in place of woven batten because it sticks to other media in pieces whereas batten peels off cleanly.

My wife says that I am getting obsessed with filtration. Maybe so but I like it. She got me into this hobby and now I am obsessed. :)
