Blue's 80 Gallon Mbuna Tank

A streak of bad luck is going on among the mbuna keepers members of this forum; I'm scared and crossing my fingers. Aye, Blue and all the good friends here: don't give up, OK?
SERIOUSLY!? What is going on with all the mbuna? I thought they were suppose to be tough?

Sorry for your losses Blue

Stunning tank nonetheless

You're a great fishkeeper and I'm sure you'll get on top of it
Keep your head up
seriously sucks. I hate when this happens to a tank when u do all the right things
i know how you feel, some things are beyond our control sometimes. nature happens. i was planning on selling my halfbeaks, but nearly all of them died. so it opened up space, but i still fell bad and there went $20
That stinks! Good luck to you blue! It is hard not knowing what is going on with our fishy friends. :(
Thanks for all the kind words :) It's so frustrating knowing I take such good care of my tanks yet they still get sick.

It really and truly helps to have some support.

My husband told me today that if we got a big screen TV, put it where the tank is now and put on a fish screen saver, I wouldn't loose anymore fish. I told him it was tempting but for now I'll stick it out :)

I've decided that this tank is off limits to new fish until I know that everything is under control. I started treatment today for columnaris. And this time I will treat for a longer time than I did last time the disease came up. I'm going to be as aggressive with it as I can. I just wish I wasn't going out of town this weekend. I hope they can all hold on until I get back.
If I end up loosing my male white top I will try and get another one from the same breeder. That will increase my chances of getting another stunner. It hurts to think he might not make it. But all is not lost.

Well got back from my trip and headed straight for the tank.

My male msobo is healing up well. At first I had 3 fish missing. My male white top, a young white top and one of my female msobos. After feeding the tank the small white top came out and he also looks like he's healing up well. I waited and still no sign of the other 2. I got a flash light and shined it back around the rocks and nothing. Finally it one little cave I found the body of my male white top hara :( I still haven't found the female msobos so I fear the worst.
I am seriously heartbroken over the loss of my hara. He was so pretty. Now there's a war going on for the new dominant male and for some reason my females seem to be winning. I'm guessing it's since I don't have another male. None of them look as pretty as the male I lost.
Once this clears up I'm not sure what I will do. I have thought of replacing the haras with a different vertical striped mbuna. But most don't have very nice females. I'll ask the breeder I got mine from if he has any extra males.

Anyway I'm just finishing up my second round of meds. I think I will treat a third round to be sure. Especially since my remaining female msobo has a torn fin that I don't want to get infected.

Sorry for the loss, Blue! Keep the good work with the meds treatment and good luck!

The disease finally seems to be over. Last treatment was last week and the fish are looking a lot better. Hopefully in the next few months I can do some restocking. Here's my list now:
1f- Pseudotropheus Acei
1m-Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos
4f:1unknown Cynotilapia sp"White Top Hara"
2m:1f:2 juvs-Metriaclima msobo
4juv:-Pseudotropheus Socolofi(albino)
1m:3f- Metriaclima Callainos
4 Syno petricola
1 Red Tail Shark, who has been growing very well despite all the problems.

Here's the new stocking plan:

1)The acei will most likely be rehomed. I had a chance to get 3 more adult acei but the lady sold to someone else at the last second. I was not happy. Acei are hard to find in my area so most likely I won't get another chance to get more.
2)The white top haras are also going to go. I just have so many of them and they look just like the cobalts. There's a lot more demand in my area for the haras anyway. 3)I'm still undecided about what will happen to the cobalts. As they grow I'll see how I'm feeling about it.
4)I am set up to get a trio of Cynotilapia jalo reefs next month. I've seen this male in person and he is stunning. The females are bland so I'm only getting a couple so he keeps his coloring. They will be held for me for as long as I need to make sure my stock is ok.
5)Also next month I am set up to replace my mainganos and hopefully I'll be able to pick up a few more socolofis.
6)The msobos will be replaced as I find them.

I'm getting more synos at the end of this month that I'll be growing out in my 20 gallon. Once they are big enough to not be eaten I'll add them to the 80 gallon.

No fish will be leaving the tank until I know for sure they are no longer sick/carrying disease. I've been running a UV sterilizer since I stopped treatment and keeping the water very clean. Hopefully it helps.

Funny, just this morning I had taken a look at your 55 pics on another thread, and then came across this. I'm so sorry to hear about all of the trouble you'e been through. I really appreciate your help the last couple of days, and am glad to hear that things are looking up for you. My fingers are crossed, and I've asked my fish to cross their fins, too!

Yay! Lets hope the horror is REALLY over for you with this disease, I have been so worried for you & your fish! My Cobalt is a NASTY bugger, every day he gets worse, even when the food is hitting him in the face he is still chases everyone away from him "canyon". I am ripping the tank apart tomorrow to get him out of there! Not that yours may be that way but that's my experience with these guys.

Just FYI I'm not turning my tank into a community tank, it was just a moment of weakness (from stress and wanting another tank)!! But still I might have some fish for you depending on what I decide to get rid of and what you decide to keep so we'll keep in touch! Just have the shipping hurdle!

Everyone should have an awesome Tanganyika tank as well.. :grinno:
