bout to give up on my fish

went to petsmart, all my levels tested fine.
can you please define 'tested fine.'?? i am having a hard time with this thread because you have never really posted your water parameters (or at least if you did i missed it)

my girlfriend, when she first got her tank, thought that .25ppm ammonia, and 2ppm nitrite were 'fine' because they were simply very low in relation to the test range. she no longer thinks her parameters are 'fine' she thinks of them as ammonia 0,nitrite 0,nitrate 20,ph 8.2

come on now. im signed up on this board. that means i have atleast some knowledge.

when i mean fine, i mean 0, or really **** close to it that the color is so close to matching 0, i think its 0.

yesterday i did a 20 percent water change. and i got paranoid so i did another 20 pecent. someone told me, that it was the salt that was killing my barbs. and i quote, "you have an insane amount of salt in that tank, and you're seeing salt toxicity. Too much salt is interferes with their osmotic function, thus the lack of control. It is also a strong irritant, very capable of destroying fin tissue. Start doing large water changes (don't worry about shock-- they'll be dead if you don't). All the parasites in the tank should be quite dead at this point, so there's no reason to start treating with meds instead."

how much salt did i put in? about 2 teaspoons per gallon.

today, the last 3 barbs (out of EIGHT) are doinng much better it seems like. they seem to have gained a lot of their control, although here and there they'll just turn up and float up for a second. my rainbow shark, who i thought was gonna be a goner yesterday, is swimming around. my neons are swimming a bit, but not much, i think they're just scared.

rams are doing fine, as they always were.

Yeah, with my nitrIte problem, One angel died, one acted really stressed (and still does, once in a while, for a few minutes) The male pearl had NO color... the female pearl was just like, "la de da... what's up, guys?" whistlin' everything's great... no signs of stress at all. Even the BN's acted stressed once in a while, but the female pearl was just doing her thing... it's wierd how that works sometimes...

Anyway, they are all fine now, except the one angel still scares me once in a while... she'll swim on her side for a second, or have her nose out of the water gasping for a second, and then just go back to swimming around normally. I'm afraid I might still lose her as a result of this, but at this point, there is nothing I can do except keep it stable... Same for you, just keep everything as stable as possible, (including keeping waterchanges the same as they have been) and hopefully nothing else dies.

don't worry allecb, that was not 'an insane amount of salt' by any means. You could even go higher than that without problems, depending on your specific fish.

I'm glad to hear your fish are showing improvement. Just try to keep things stable and clean and it sounds like you're coming out on the other side of all this!

i think all fish react different to different conditions. maybe where im around, the fish are kinda just weak against salt, cause they seem to be doing better now that theres less salt. who knows though, im only half way thru this.

update..

all fish seem to be doing better, except now im down two 1 tiger barb..well, two, but the other one rigth now is under a tree probably near its death.

im never adding 2 teaspoons per gallon of salt into my tank again.
