Breeding Amano Shrimp

I thought I'd post an update. It's now day 10 since the amano shrimp hatched. A few are still swimming around in the tank. The ones that have molted into the next form are very hard to find because they are almost entirely clear. There are also a few left that appear to still have a yoke sak hanging from them, but they are easier to spot because they are darker in color. The bottom of the tank is starting to become covered with what looks like a brown algae that I assume to be diatoms. I am uncertain how much to feed them, but have been feeding DT's live phytoplankton, and the water is just barely slightly cloudy from giving them a pipette of the stuff each day. I don't know if 95% of them died off or if they are just hanging out in a place that is hard to spot them.

Ive been using my brine shrimp sieve in the tank with a hose in in to do the water changes to make sure I don't accidently suck any out during water change.

How long do you guys normally let new saltwater mixes sit to stabolize before performing a water change? I've only been waiting one day.

I did notice a change in the salinity from when I first set up the tank, it has increased from 30ppt at initial setup to 32ppt now. I think this is because I have been replacing water lost to evaporation with tap water instead of distilled water. I would have expected the salinity to drop, given the salt deposits building up around the top of the tank.

Just until all the salt has disolved off the bottom of my trash can vid. I don't know beans about ammano shrimp but, a lot of larval shrimp are attracted to lights. Try shining one on the bottom of the tank and see what it attracts.

I'd imagine that some of the salt creep is falling into your water causing the spikes in salinity. Your s.g. should be .021 to .026
hope this helps a bit

Shortly after my last post, I failed to find any more living baby amano shrimp. Since then I have been maintaining the with water changes and dosing with phytoplankton. I've been keeping brine shrimp in the tank to maintain a bioload. I've also been keeping the SG between 1.022 and 1.025. A number of different types of algae are beginning to cover the bottom of the tank and should make nice food for the next batch.

I noticed last night that my mother amano shimp is carrying her second batch of eggs, so I should get a chance to try again here within the next couple weeks.

I think I did well for my first attempt by keeping some of the babies alive for almost two weeks even though I was not completely prepared. I am ready and waiting to see if I can do better the second try..

cool man keep us posted this is a neat thread.

Arrrgh, I managed to kill all of them in the 2nd batch by day two this time. I was trying to slowly acclimate them to SW by adding a small amount each day, but had forgotten in my reading that they need a few days in FW to build up a tolerance to salt. I should have waited a couple more days before starting this.

Maybe the third try will be a charm..

My shimp has eggs again. I just got a new digital camera today and managed to get a good up close picture of the shrimp with eggs and thought I would share it.
