I stopped at the LFS today, just to waste a little time while my daughter had her piano lesson. I noticed that many of the tanks are no longer labeled with the names of the fish species! Not even the common names! A bunch of tanks just said "tetras and barbs". Not helpful to beginners trying to figure out which fish they like and actually learn about them before buying. There were also lots of sick fish. Bleh.

Did you say anything to their manager?

Wow, people are so lazy these days that just to save time they will write 1 word instead of 2 or 3.

just so messed up, its not like the employees have saved 1 hour, they could probably have wrote the rest of the names in like 5 min, its not like they are helping customers full time(i bet they don't have any since the employees are too lazy to even net, and bag the fish)

:(

If it is like most of the big box pet stores nowadays, neither the employee nor the manager know the difference between a barb and a tetra!

I don't know. If they don't know what they have, but you do, buy them at the I don't know price. You may come out with a good deal.

Actually, at this one chain store that's by my house, there was this guy who was pretty knowledgeable about fish.

I went to Phoenix, AZ a few ago and was disgusted at how the chains were cleaner than 3/6 of the stores I visited. A lot of people run them part time (11m-3pm and such) and don't really care about the fish. One was feeding Top Fin brand to everything, including Afro cichlids, and on timers too. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! It's all about the money with "mom and pop" stores more and more eh? They're almost as bad as chains nowadays.

It really depends on people, there are some decent chain stores. I have one Petco here, it's tanks are spotless, they have several full time employees that are very knowledgeable. I've overhead them asking questions about the customers tank, like how long it was set up, what was currently in the tank, before they scooped out the fish, then went on to tell them why they shouldn't buy the fish they were looking at. I have bought otos from them, they are still alive. It's the only store in my County I will buy any fish from.

I have a small LFS mom/pop store 2 mins from my house, I have never, will never buy anything from them, it's beyond gross. The other Petco and 3 Petsmarts in this County have clean tanks, but their employees are worthless.

If I want a decent LFS, I have to drive 35 mins. His tanks are clean, his livestock healthy. But know what you are buying, he'll sell you anything.
