I orders both the fenbendazole flakes and the levamisole flakes from angel pulss...the fish are accepting both .one treatment of each at this point and they are all eating it..lost one of my small rainbows..but the rest seem to be pulling threw.
still see a few worms but i have a few rounds of treatment still to go.
Great to hear. That's much like my experience in that it takes awhile. Afterwards they often get an internal bacterial infection, so if they don't bounce back a round of antibiotics may be needed, preferably food-based.
I have always purchased my Levimasole HCL and Flubendazole 10% from Charles Harrison at http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/
There are some very helpful articles and dosing information on the site.
I would not go near that 52 gm for $20 stuff at that link. I do not know what other stuff is in it. This is what the label says"
Each packet contains 46.8 grams of levamisole hydrochloride activity.
How do you know for sure whether you have these again? I have a male pearl gourami with what looks like a little worm tip coming out of his anus, but I can see it all the time. It never goes "in" and is always the same length, and I've never seen it move in a wormy fashion. It only moves when he moves his whole bottom fin to flare it out, and it flares out in the same direction as the other fin rays. My husband thinks I'm crazy and says it is just his smallest fin ray and only looks like it is coming out of the anus. However if I were to take a picture it would look a lot like the pictures in this thread. No other symptoms that I have noticed whatsoever.
Sometimes I can't tell if this site makes me more informed, or more paranoid
Just gave my fish the angels plus flakes and they all readily took it (granted, I've been feeding them sparingly the past week to make sure they'd be hungry when the flakes arrived). I decided to move the one angel I had that wasn't eating and my two BN plecos to a quarantine tank. I figured they were least likely to eat the flakes and could re-infect the rest of the fish if I left them in.
Do a google image search. You should be able to find numerous pictures. After comparing what I saw in my angels to google images, I knew for sure what I had was camallanus worms.
I know. Some of the pictures look exactly right to me, but the behavior of the potential worm does not, and there's no wriggling. But then again that's why I asked, because maybe someone else's worms did behave this way (like part of the fish)? Or maybe someone else has a male pearl and knows that's just what their anatomy is like. There's also no other symptoms that I've seen in the fish in question, or others in the tank. But maybe I should medicate anyway? I honestly can't tell if I'm being a fish hypochondriac! Or a good fishkeeper and catching something early. Lol
I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. ETA the pearl only ever has the one.
Mesto, usually seeing the worms is the first symptom. It can come as a shock because the fish is eating and acting normally, at least for a while. It may even be hungrier than usual because the worms are living off of it. The live worms will look like red threads due to the blood. If the protrusion is always there just hanging it doesn't sound like what I've experienced but maybe someone can help nail down what it could be. How long has it been there?
Thanks Jannika! I first noticed it about 2 weeks ago, and it has been there ever since. I don't know if it was there before, because it is pretty small.
ETA it is reddish orange, but so is he on the underside...
It's stuff like this where I realize how little I know about fish!
Here's a post-mortem pic from a couple of years ago, if it helps any. The live worms I've seen are always very red, and usually there's more than one to several emerging. If you could get a good pic of area we may be able to tell.
Some shots I was able to get of my angels. My particular case seems to have the worms protruding most of the time in the angels. I have yet to see any worms protruding from any of the other fish in the tank. All of my angels have the worms (5 total), so I can only assume all of the fish have it
