Camallanus Worms - now you see them, now you don't.

Thanks for everyone's responses!:dance2:

If I was unclear, I was trying to figure out what would be the benefits to moving all my fish into another tank, and then just cleaning my tank with bleach solution and resetting it up, verses treating the water and fish in current tank.

Anyways I ordered Levamisole powder, for the entire tank as currently set up, and fenbenezole medicated fish flakes.

My Levamisole just arrived:dance: getting ready to do a water change and then add the meds :)

Hope this helps my fish on their way to recovery.

Well, it turns out I DO have them. It's the same platy that had the gill flukes so bad. Probably she was susceptible to the flukes because she was fighting other worms too. I noticed her anus was swollen and just like as you described, when she stopped moving for just a second, I saw several wrigglers pop out. I see no signs of it in any other fish. I wonder how effective normal QT procedures are for these worms! I don't QT all fish, but I did these platies, for 3 weeks. I added them to my tank over 2 months ago at this point and it took over a month for me to observe the fluke symptoms and 2 months for me to see these worms - so I would have had to QT for almost 3 months to catch this I think. I think I will also be deworming fish with both prazipro and internal dewormer before adding to my main tank from now on, no matter what. Since these are both fairly safe drugs for fish, I am going to look at it the same as deworming any livestock, or even the heartworm meds or flea and tick preventative you give dogs and cats.

Now I want to dose my whole tank even though I only see any evidence in this one platy because of what Kaoso is saying...but I have read reports of these drugs killing all your snails. And bonding to the silicone so that it will keep killing. I guess I could live with that except I am worried about a massive pollution effect if all of my snails die at once, also I really appreciate all my snails do for the tank so will be so bummed if I can't add them back :( At least I keep seeing reports that these drugs tend to be shrimp safe.

I'm calling my vet to see if they can hook me up with fLUbendaole or levimasole since those seem to be the better choices for water column dosing? I mean these ARE pets...

Thanks SR, that is very helpful. I am going to hope for the best!

The link is especially helpful since I have determined vets hate fish. And now my vet thinks I'm crazy. LOL

Anyone know if the worms would still be effecting my net, syphon, and buckets ? Is there any treatment to do on the rest of my equipment ?

I know it's been awhile, but I wouldn't use the same nets or buckets between tanks, and letting them dry out completely helps. If you only have one siphon, I'd wash it really good. Hope everyone's fish are doing well. Bo has been the picture of health since beating the worms, a bacterial infection, and hole-in-the-head all within a month!

Well, it turns out I spoke too soon. Bo was bottom-sitting all day, but no clamped fins and his color is good. I thought maybe he's just getting old and tired.

I got him off the bottom to eat and snapped this pic....

Since he's been in a tank by himself I'm thinking that either the Panacur I used was too old, I didn't use enough, or they've become resistant. What a freakin nightmare THAT would be! Anyway, I ordered some fresh and plan to extend the treatment time. I'll keep updating.

..:( same problem for me..only one fish showing worms now..I have lost 5 fish in the tank to date..been feeding medicated flakes at the moment..waiting on more funds before re dosing the tank.

gahh good luck with round two!

if you haven't tried Levamisole I would recommend you try it. I believe it targets Camallanus
