Can fish eat chocolate?

If it was a small piece i think they should be ok since they are chiclids, but keep an eye out.

it was a WHOLE peanut butter cup... they only ate about half of it though because I was frantically trying to net it out as soon as I saw it hit the water. The fish hadnt eaten yet, so they were on it immediately and ate half before I could stop them

Note that I DO NOT condone feeding chocolate to fish lol.. it wasnt intentional he is 3 years old and I cant really get mad at him he was trying to help.. but I nicely explained that fish cant eat people food (didnt wanna try to explain the difference between good and bad people food)

they seem to be ok right now.. I guess we will see in the morning

@Lupin.. I dont know the ingredients but it is a chocolate shell with "peanut butter" filling (I say that in quotes because I doubt the candy is actually wholesome peanut butter.. its probably mostly sugar)

lol theyle probly poop out a lot of chocolate id feed the a bit extral fish food to flush out the chocolate

Im pretty sure overfeeding isnt a good cure for ANY ailment... even indulgence lol

It is actually the coco in the chocolate that is toxic. Dogs are given active charcoal to absorb the toxins after ingesting chocolate. Most milk chocolate (as in a Reeces) does not contain much coco, and white chocolate is just sugar.
I hope your guy is ok. Keep us posted.

I agree with Coach. I know this is my first post but I have heard of people feeding peas to help flush out a fish's system. It might be worth a shot if you are still concerned at this point. Good luck with your fishies.

I guess you'll be a test subject on cichlids consuming chocolate.
I assume they'd be okay, a little bit of chocolate won't do too much harm, I don't think.

Hope they live!

Not all dogs are affected by chocolate, it varies by breed and even from dog to dog. Something to do with an allergic reaction to the cocoa that can kill some dogs, mildly irritate others, and not affect some at all.

My guess is that your fish will be fine. If one of the fish did the majority of the eating, it may cause him/her some damage but if they all just had a couple bites I wouldn't worry about it. They are, afterall, cichlids, who would gladly eat a dog full of chocolate and live to tell the tale.

Just keep your eyes peeled. I'd do a partial water change to clean up the sugar hanging around.
