Can fish eat chocolate?

i think your cichlids will probably be fine. when i had my oscar, my nephew fed 4 or 5 m&m's to it, and it was fine. i just did a few partial waterchanges and fed it some de-shelled peas to clear outs its digestive tract.

i agree with the peas. idk why i didn't think of it before, but i fed my goldfish deshelled peas every week or so just to clean out their systems. if they will take them, i assume it will do the same for your guys.. note that i have never tried this with cichlids, though, and do not know if any ill side effects will occure

My first thought was peas also. Maybe followed by daphnia. Otherwise, I really have no idea....

There's a chemical in the chocolate, in the cocoa itself, theobromine, that is toxic to dogs, and the darker the chocolate the more potent and likely to kill or sicken dogs.

Having said that, my sister had a Bichon Frise that got hold of a full bag of Dove chocolate bars. She opened the plastic bag, peeled the foil cleanly off each piece and ate the whole bag. A 12 pound dog ate that 1 pound bag of dove bars.

My sister came home to find all these little squares of foil all over the living room rug; clean as a whistle. Angie ate every smidgen of it. She lived another 8 years and died of old age, lol.
Good thing they were milk chocolate and not the dark chocolate Dove bars.

Is theobromine harmful to fish? I don't know. There are many things we eat that are harmful to dogs, cats, and birds. I read that you should never give your bird avocado.
Or your dog raisens, or oinions. (My dog has had onion on her burger a few times, lol and she's fine.)

Chocolate has caffeine in it, too. So, do caffeine and theobromine have a harmful affect on fish? I wish I knew, but I just have a feeling your fish will be OK.

Should work fine. African cichlids will pretty much eat anything that hits the water (which I guess is the reason for 7itanium's predicament in the first place) so I don't think there will be any trouble getting them to eat peas. I would definitely try it to help move things along in their systems, lol.

Any update on the fish? I really think they will be ok. I'd do a large (50-60%) water change today, and maybe another tomorrow just to be safe. Good luck!!! :)

The only negative side effect to anything eating chocolate in my experience is diahrea. This can kill a dog due to dehydration, but I think it would be really difficult for a fish to die of dehydration. Melody sounds like she knows what she's talking about with that theo-stuff, though.... and I'm not a vet or anything, I've just had a lot of trouble maker animals.

i would be more worried ao but the pnutbutter part of the reeces cup....
i think a 50% water change and some good gravel vacumning would be the biggest thing on the agenda...to clean up the remains and that which is left...and might i suggest a cage for the nephew :D

The oils in the water will most likely be a problem. Definately mass water changes.... just don't forget conditioner.....

I well dad used to have a huge (90g) cichlid tank, I fed it all sorts of food as a kid, now I know not to but they just got bigger. not a single one died from sugary food in OUR tank.

Also, is dark chocolate and it has to be atleast 30% real cocoa to cause any sort of illness in animals. I rushed my malamute to the vet when she ate the solid milk chocolate easter basket thing I got the wife one year. She had the poops and real stinky stinkers but that was about it, she was lethargic though while digesting.
