can this be done?

(Warning, I am extremely biased for lionfish and against triggers)

Instead of damsels, get reef chromis. They will be better for what you're trying to accomplish.

I wouldn't get a Volitan Lion unless you have a wide tank. They have a huge wing span, up to 20" on both sides of them. Here's a picture to give you an idea of their wing span:

They're a few species of lionfish that do not get as big as the Volitans, like Clearfin and Spotfin Lionfish, which in my opinion, are more beautiful.

Also, a Lionfish is a very slow moving peaceful fish. And tank mates should be stocked accordingly.

Have you also considered that you will NEVER be able to put your hand in the tank? Triggers bite and Lionfish sting.

If I had to stock your 125gallon, I would pick a Clearfin or Spotfin lionfish, a zebra fuzzy dwarf lionfish, a zebra moray eel. Then whatever you wanted for cleanup crew. Starfish, snails, crabs, etc. You could even add a tube anemone or a bulb tip.

You might also want to keep in mind that it's near impossible to house a Lionfish in a reef tank because of the massive waste load they produce. Filtration has to be very, very efficient in removing nitrates and decomposing matter.

And whatever you do, never feed your Lion goldfish. A guy at a local fish store told me had one for years, feeding it goldfish. Then one day it just died while feeding. He concluded that it died from, brace yourself for this one..., from choking on a goldfish. His Lion died of an moronic owner who feed it food that rotted his kidneys out.

Anyway, good luck on whatever you decide! And don't forget to post pictures!

lol goldfish, i would never feed anything like that..... i would feed shrimp, clams, squid, fish such as cod, krill (freeze dried or frozen) and such.

My tank is only 18" wide, so i guess a volitian is not that good of an idea, but its hard for me to find another with as much beauty....

I also picked a trigger fish that is much more peaceful, hoping it would not nip at the lion, because we all know how that ends up.

I do understand the problem with hands in tank, but i figure i can use a pair of tongs for most things?

Well there are other lionfish that don't get as big. Like the Radiata Lion:

thats a pretty looking lion.... how big does it get?

Would you treat it like any other lion?

What do YOU think my stocking should resemble with a lion such as the one above?

Thanks,
Jay

w/ the radian I would prob put in

1 eel
1 puffer fish
1 yellow tang or purple tang (NOT BOTH)
1 red hawkfish
maybe a marine betta

i havent really looked into puffers that much... maybe i should

This is so hard for me, cause i really like triggers and lions and would love to have them in the same set-up. But that also limits what else i can put in, and can be risky itself.

I also really like smaller reef fish, so im lost right now.

Lol

Radiata Lion gets about 10", but has a much smaller wing span then its larger cousin.

Lion's are actually very peaceful fish. Smaller fish are very possible with a Lionfish provided you feed him on time and there is many hiding places for the smaller ones.

With a tank your size you might check into zebra moray's. They're one of the more peaceful moray eels and wont attack your fish provided you feed it on time also. They get a little shorter then 4 feet and live for a long long time.

spotfin and fu manchus are also more smaller lions but i think fu's are considered dwarf lions.
i thought i heard or read somewhere that zebras were bad choices, but i'll look into that before saying more.
another eel to consider is the chain moray which also stays small or or dwarf tulip eel, but those are hella expensive (but worth it IMO)
if $$$ not really an issue you could get a tuskfish or one of the large-ish wrasses

how about something like this

Radiata lion
Niger Trigger
Flame Hawkfish
Maroon Clown
eel (of some sort lol)
