can you feed big fish dog food??

i've heard of feeding chinese water dragons dogfood. just check the ingredients on the bag, if they're close to what your fish would eat, then go for it.

the cheaper/more common variety of dogfood will usually contain mostly corn or vegetable products (thats how they make it so much cheaper than the expensive kind) if your fish would be safe eating these, with a little bit of red meat flavoring, i'd say go for it.

one problem is that dogfoods sometimes have lots of preservatives, which might not be healthy for fishies. also, dry dogfood falls apart quickly in water, and will spoil the water in a heatbeat if you dont keep an eye on it.

hope that helps.

It has already been established that dog food has all the wrong ingredients in it. It does not matter the quality of dog food. It has too much of the wrong fats, and is mostly protein matter. Many fish do not do well on an all protein diet.

i dont believe he asked it in a full time matter, i think he was just thinking it as a treat or something. You guys should respond a little nicer and not make fun when someone has a question, thats what makes people leave forums. Rudeness

yes, if you get quality dogfood it is high in protein, but like i said before, some are mostly corn or other vegetables (thats not protein) so it depends on the ingredients.

ALSO some fish eat other fish exclusively, those fish have high protein diets (there is protein in fish)

regardless of the dogfood you find, its NOT an all protein diet. dogs need carbs too. yes, the fats are different, but the fats among different dogfoods are different. and the fats among different fishfoods are different. if you cared enough to do some searching, you could find some that would be a decent treat for your fish.

but like i said before, i dont know that its worth it.

Well to throw in my 2 cents here....

As for dogs eating fish food. Any time i accidentally leave a container of fish food where either of my two dogs can get to it I might as well kiss it goodbye. This morning I found , out in my back yard, the crushed and emptied remains of a can of Juvi granule food I had mistakenly left on a low sitting cabinet.

The most it's ever done in the past is .. well.. soften their stool consistency some.

I know more than a few people with stocked catfish ponds who use dog food , and as mentioned above, usually result is great quality fish. THen again catfish are scavengers more than the predatory style of Oscars and I suspect there is some dietrary difference.

ha ha ha ha ha.... now that is funny! You should stick around and get to know the members of this forum and then form an opinion about who is serious and who isn't.

Hans himself will come in here laughing. I'm sure we didn't hurt his feelings, but if we did then I am sorry Hans. ;)

You probably could, however tuna isn't very nutritious. It has the fats that we humans need, but are fats which fish do not need. Also, the vitamins and minerals in tuna fish are very poor. You might get a semi - decent amount of vitamin B-12 out of the tuna, but in general it's useless to aquarium fish.
