can you feed big fish dog food??

Socal- If you had, say a cat or dog, would you give him/her soda to drink instead of water? I don't think so. Everyone knows gummy worms aren't good for you, or for your fish, and if you have to question that then you dont deserve to have fish! :p

I wasn't talking about gummy worms, I thought we were talking about dog food? I wouldn't give my fish gummy worms either (you have to draw the line somewhere). I wouldn't even feed my fish the dog food, I was just trying to say that if someone wanted to try it (still not talking about gummy worms), go for it! If you see any ill affects (you probably will, but you never know), then you can tell people with certainty:

"hey, I've fed my fish dog food before and it's not a good idea."

The natural diets of most fish are rich in protein, so prepared rations must also have a high protein content, usually between 25-40 per cent. Fats are the most concentrated energy source of the nutrient groups. In addition to supplying energy, fats serve as storage reserves, insulation for the body, cushioning for vital organs, lubrication and transporters of fat-soluble vitamins. Fish feeds most commonly contain 5-17 per cent fat.

The natural diet of most fish is low in carbohydrates; therefore, the maximum level of digestible carbohydrates in fish diets should not exceed 20 per cent. Because wheat and other whole grains are carbohydrate sources, the (sometimes suggested) feeding of corn or boiled wheat is not recommended.

Vitamins and minerals are compounds that are required in very small quantities to regulate certain biochemical or enzymatic reactions in the body. Quality fish feeds will have these trace ingredient requirements listed.

Because of the particular dietary needs of fish, the use of other pet foods is not recommended. For example, lower protein levels and higher carbohydrate or fibre levels in most dog foods make them unsuitable for proper fish growth or maintaining good water quality.

Oh and all of you guys jumping on AFG - it is Hans' job around these parts to keep us on our toes with crazy ideas. So take a chill pill.

You have a good point. I meant it was a good example "IF" his fish are still alive. But "I" wouldn't do it. Honestly I don't even remember quoting the gummyworms and peanut butter thing (although obviously I did) but I was talking about dog food the whole time. But all this arguing shows how stupid the idea really is. I would like to restate my position on this whole deal. I don't agree with giving fish improper nutrition.

I started thinking about it and I thought, if I wouldn't give it to my fish, then why would I support other people giving it to their fish?

Oh, and if it's not important, then why bring it up?:p (Glad you did though!:D )

I dont go into the FW sections anymore but this thread is pretty interesting...

I guess ill add that ive fed my mbuna salmon one time and just a little peice. It really polluted the tank.

i was going to start my own thread but i might as well post it here....

i have an ant nest outside my window and they keep coming into my room and are all over my tanks.

do you think i could squish the ants and feed them to my fish? i'm sure my betta and angel would like them.... would they be okay for aficans too?

:D

ants are very high in chinin (i think thats how it's spelled) and they're not very nutritious. they might be a fun snack though.

just be sure they arent fireants.. cuz THAT could cause a serious problem.

I can't get my betta to eat small flies I place on the surface as treats. I am sure cichlids would go for it though.
