Canister Filter Suggestions

i am very happy with my cascade. seems to me people like eheim for dependability, fluval for flow rates, marineland for versatility, etc., etc..

as far as i know most canisters have the ability to use a wide variety of media. if you want something they don't come with you can always get what you want. to me that means the media argument is null and void unless you're comparing products of similar price and performance.

in conclusion my cascade does the same job for a whole lot less than the "big names". even after choosing my own custom media which i now no longer have to replace most of... ever.

Are canister filters harder to use than HOBs? Are there any inherent problems with them I should watch for?

yeah, they can be hidden anywhere and can be a pain to take apart for cleaning sometimes. i'd be very careful to place it somewhere convenient for it to be pulled out. i am considering putting in a disconnect for the power wire for mine due to how i placed things. that should make it a lot easier to pull out.

Why are they hard to clean? With my HOBs, I just pull them off, empty everything out and swish it around really well in a bucket of treated water. Wouldnt you just turn the canister off, pull the stuff out and rinse it?

i love my rena so i recommend them to everyone. i think the fluval issues were on older models, so really, it's just a matter of personal preference. canisters are fantastic though.

they are made to be kept under the water line. therfore they must be water tight to prevent disaster. to keep them water tight every manufacturer has a different locking mechanism they use. sometimes these or the hose disconnects can be a short battle. still then if you put it in in a way it's tight to get to your hose connections that can be a pain. there's a couple other little things similar also. this is why placement is important.

it's really no biggie... definitely not enough to justify not using one once you consider the difference in performance. they can fight back for a little while and be a pain in the arse though.

with my hob i don't even turn it off to clean it. i just pull off the lid that just sits there and there's the media. it's a lot easier but it'll never be enough filtration for my tank imho.

The one thing Eheim has over everybody else is "SILENCE"
If you can deal with noises like rattling, humming and what not then the Eheim is not a must have.
