We had a power outage this weekend that killed my biowheel. So I'm thinking of upgrading a canister filter. It's for a 55 gallon planted tank. I'm looking to stay around $100 for the filter.

Can you make some suggestions for me?

cascade canister 1000 is right around that price range.
sunsun seems to be another option in that range (actually lower) for that size tank.

I'm looking to get a Sunsun for my first canister. Everything I've read about them is pretty good and they are definitely a price I can afford.

I'm reading mixed reviews of the Cascade. The Sunsun filters more gallons for the same price. :)

I'm a huge fan of Eheim but the 2217 would probably be a bit more then you want to spend around $150 shipped. The SunSun filters get great reviews though and there are quite a few over at plantedtank.net starting to use them.

Magnum 350 $100 for industrial quality cleaning (very-good to excellent) that requires a slight learning curve for initial assembly and a lttle effort for cleaning but the results are unmatched.

The Sunsun 304 $43 for (OK to good) cleaning, requiring only caveman skills for cleaning.

See the dirt below from a Mag 350, cant touch this.
