Canister Filter

In theory, in can be done. However, it is nicer to have cannister with tank without the sump...more space for the fish and plants. Simple and likely cheaper too.

Certainly canisters have been fitted to bulkhead fittings for years. It is a bit more hassle, but it works just fine. You are still likely to want some return diffuser device inside the tank (spraybar, etc.) and certainly an intake strainer or prefilter on the intake, but a sump is in no way required for that use.

Those are exactly the beauty of a sump :)
Personally, I still prefer cannister. May be I received too much advertisement and sweet talks from the LFS. Definitely brainwashed.
Wait a minute, I think I use cannister because sumps remove CO2 which is not good for my plants.

the green tube on the bottom is the intake and bar across the tank is the outtake.
