Cascade 700 help

I just set up my Cascade 700 and when I plug it in after primming the impeller just sounds like it is running dry. I followed the directions all the way but I did notice that in the insturctions there is a part called a "media basket joint." This filter didn't come with one but has a "stem" from the motor housing. Is the filter missing this part or does this "stem" replace the "media basket joint"?
Help please.
 
is there water in the intake tube when you turn it on? i dont know that much about canisters
 
I primmed it so there should have been but no there wasn't. When I opened it up I could tell there wasn't water in the intake tube. I think it is because there has to be a media basket joint connecting to the motor impeller housing.
 
wouldnt the siphoin bring the water down??
 
Yes it should. I am not sure if it is though. The prime button is difficult to push. It feels like air is acting against it (is that what it is supposed to feel like?) and when I push the prime button I don't hear any water flowing into the canister.
 
Look further down on this page and you'll see a guy with the 1500 model that had the same issue.

Seems that he need to press the primer button harder and more times then the instructions indicated.

I have a cascade 500 and when this happens to me i find that I forgot to open the valves to let water in, so check that, otherwise make sure the little rubber gasket is properly placed. Another trick is i use is to madly push the primer while the pump is plugged in, basically until all the air is forced out.

I'll try primming while it is on. I am certain that the valves are open on the intake and output pipes. I'll let you all know what happens.
 
Leave it off, just pump that button way more than the instructions say. I just went through the exact same thing setting up my 1500 a few days ago.
