this second one is more diy than i care to remember... but i eventually bought filters, lol.

While we're having nice but constructive critiques, I like both tanks but not really "getting" the prefilter "decor" in the 2nd tank. Is it part of the filter issue you fixed? It needs something on the left side IMO to balance the very nice right side. Guppyland in the first pic seems well put together, although, like my tanks, on the verge of overgrowth, almost hard to control...(with a glass of wine  or maybe 2)

It's often difficult starting with small live plants where some grow faster than others, some die, are uprooted or grow hideous algae. Those gorgeous planted tanks are a LOT of work, more than I'm willing or able to do. And they don't always look that fabulous on the way or long after the photo.

Ain't that the truth...and that's what I love about planted tanks. They're constantly changing all on their own. On the other hand, artificially decorated tanks remain stagnant for the most part until the aquarist decides to change things up a bit.

I love the ebb & flow of my tanks, oops overgrown, oh! they're breeding, whoops algae. All a fun part of the process to me but over 30 years, I'm in it for the loooong haul, LOL. As I think you are too, Slappy

Keeping photo journals of your tanks (pics every few weeks/months) allows you to see these changes that take place over time. Otherwise, you might not notice subtle changes or even remember what your tank once looked like in comparison to the present.
Some plants do take over and bully out the less 'aggressive' growers in time if you don't keep them in check. Brazilian Pennywort is one such plant. It's one of my favorite stem plants, though...so I tend to let it do what it wants. ;)

1" of fish rule...??? That was proven bogus yrs ago....

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

This is my 10G back in 9/08...

and here it is 10 months later (7/09)...

These are just 2 of 40 pics I have of this tank over a 3 yr span. Some of which record the tank at it's worst...lol.

Classic Flourite mixed about 50/50 with pool filter sand. Thanks for the complement, BTW. I haven't posted any pics of this tank at it's worst, either. ;) Ha!

That Pennywort grows like something from a horror movie and I've actually taken trimmings from it and planted them in my 50g only to have it almost take over that tank, as well.

Here's a pic of the tank, but I do try to keep it's growth in check in this one.
