Celestial Pearl Danio experiment - success!

This is a great setup. I have 3 40s and a 20L set up outside at my brothers house, I don't have any filtration or pump on them and just have random guppies in there for now. They seem to be doing well, all I put in was some floaters like duckweed and water lettuce. I need to get some anacharis and hornwort in there, but I havent been by there in a week or so.

I can't wait to buy my own house (hopefully january), im in a duplex now and I don't exactly have a yard to just put stuff in. I'm going to get several of those 100+ gallon tubs and set them up hatchery style. It gets a bit cold here in the winter, but it's not a sustained cold since it's florida.

What kind of substrate are you using? I'm definitely putting sponge filters and air pumps in when I set these tanks up permanently.
 
Congrats! That is great and I win. I told Kalen you had container ponds. He said I was wrong. He makes fun of my "ponds". At least the ones on the inside.

Put me on the list. Last week I told shewolfgeo I am after some.
 
Jeta - I have pool filter sand in the bottom - just a thin layer for contrast or it would be impossible to see the little ones to net them out.

Hey Terry - glad you won!! What are you wanting - the CPD or the guppies OR the GBR if they ever have fry? They have been my least successful attempt so far :swear: but I do love them, cute litte guys and very personable.

I've been thinking about using the tractor supply tubs too. Now that I know it can be done in Ky I may give it a try next year.

I also may need to buy some of those CPD from ya. And I need to get some Angels off you too.
 
Sorry Andy, I wasn't very clear. CPDs were what I was referring to, however, did you get your guppies? I believe you said cobras??? I am a guppy addict so both if you have them.
 
this is a very cool experiment, I may have to try one day...do you have to preform water changes or do anything other than feed your fish in the tubs?
 
Thanks for the pics. Very instructive, and I love that pond. I wish our summers were warm enough here to do move tropical fish outside.
 
I live in Phoenix. With our winters only getting down into the low 60s oncce in a while at night, and summers sometimes up t0 low 120s, I'm more worries about leaving them out over summer than over winter lol.

This is something I may have to try. I was thinking maybe several Wal-mart Kiddie Pools, for apisto grow-outs. Hmmm. Too shallow?

I know when I was really trying to plan mine out I figured that the largest feasible volume of water per tank is crucial to keeping stable water temps. Also a method to shade them, if they aren't naturally shaded during the hottest part of the day.
 
There is a small strip of land only around 6 feet wide or so, between the house and brick fence. It stays pretty shaded, so I might try that.

This is probably a stupid question, but doesn't depth also affect temp stability? That might be another problem with the kiddie pools. But I liked them because they had a larger surface area, so more room for apisto territories, and I mgiht be able to divide them into 2-4 sections once they started pairing off.
