This is probably a stupid question, but doesn't depth also affect temp stability? That might be another problem with the kiddie pools. But I liked them because they had a larger surface area, so more room for apisto territories, and I mgiht be able to divide them into 2-4 sections once they started pairing off.

I would think so, more surface area = more transfer, evaporation, area for sunlight to heat.
 
Hey all,

I haven't done any water changes - just letting the rain fill them back up. I am only feeding sparingly - hoping that the natural stuff in ponds will keep them alive and active. I do squirt some bbs in a few times a week but that is about it - they are doing fine. I don't feed my pond fish much either - keeps mosquitoes down. Both my tubs are in shaded areas to keep them from getting too hot - give it a go and see what happens. I would wonder about the depth of kiddie pools also - if you can keep them from getting too hot I would think they would work fine. Terry - I don't have any new guppy strains - just wanted to clarify what you were looking for. I'll let you and Shewolf know when the CPD's are bigger and ready for an exchange.

So is this not a possibility with almost any fish that might thrive in a lower ph?

It might appear to be more natural for the fish and they might breed more, the only draw back is more fry maybe consumed by the adults...just letting nature take its course?

Pretty much as long as the little pond doesn't get too hot your golden?

I am sure that some are being eaten but I have a LOT more now that they have 40 gallons to hide in w/a lot of hornwort. I had only a few in the 10 gallon but the 40 is doing great.
 
yes thats what i expected...some of the fry to be eaten, but with all the hiding spots many I am sure will survive...roughly how many fry did you get after how many months?
 
I only had 4 fry in the 10 gallon after a couple of months - and it is heavily planted too! I don't have a count on the fry from the 40 but I have close to 5 dozen or more in the house right now - w/a lot more outside. I need to move the ones in the gallon jars and bring some more in - the weather is cooling down so it will be more to their liking!
 
try and get a big tank for all the fry. those 1g jars wont allow them to grow that fast. i raise my guppy fry in a 20high. they have tons of space. i also keep all my females in there too.
 
I just have them in the 1 gallon to feed them for a bit in close quarters - they get moved to a 30 gallon w/the other ones.
