Chanchito pics

After 5 days the wigglers are now free-swimming. The parents had moved them around among the floating Najas mass several times, and the female is now clearing a spot in the substrate at the front of the tank. Both parents have been keeping a close eye on their fry, picking them up as they occaisonally fell off the plants and spitting them back into place before they became free-swimming. It looks like there are less than half remaining, though it's hard to tell with them moving somewhat freely among the plant mass now. The parents are still keeping them rounded up. Looks like it's about time for the net breeder, I'm thinking of snatching at least a couple dozen and leaving the rest for the parents to look after.

It is South American, chanchito is Spanish for "little pig". The proper name is Australoheros oblongum. There are several species of Australoheros, but it seems they still need to be properly studied and classified.
I believe the males are supposed to grow to 8", but that remains to be seen.
Unfortunately, I waited too long to separate the fry. There were none left when I checked in the morning, and the other adults are starting to venture out from under cover again. Still, not a bad run for their first spawn. The HRP's I had in another tank never even made it to wigglers 3 times straight. Naturally, they did just fine for someone else after I sold them.
