While at the hardware store last nite, I saw rope lights with blue bulbs. They come in 6ft. strands. Would that work instead of the more expensive ones? TIA

Absolutely. I have red rope lights under my hood that I use for night viewing and they work perfectly. One thing to keep in mind is that they are white bulbs housed in red plastic...or blue in your case. If you have bright lights in your hood, the red (or blue) plastic will fade over time and you'll end up with white lights. My MH lights caused my red rope lights to fade so I had to replace the rope lights after about a year. Other than that, I can't think of any reason not to use rope lights.

hmm how much were those? i might get some myself. are they water retardant to some extend? i dont have a full canopy, and im just wondering where to put them

Cool!!!! Thanks. I only have the coralvue striplights on the hood that comes with the tank. I was thinking I could get some type of hanger to put around the top of the tank then string the rope light on them. I do have a hood I bought with the tank but it seems like I have no control of the tank with it on. Sure makes the tank look prettier though. And, I am disabled so taking the hood on and off is out of the question.
I do have a digi camera but I can't get the pictures to download to my pc. Too bad too because I would love to show off my tank.

Shouldn't be more than about $2 per foot. The 'rope' itself is water tight, and I wrapped electrical tape around each end :)

hey gcvt, do you have a picture with your rope lights on over your tank?

neil.

The last pic doesn't do 'em justice - they're brighter than they look but tough to get a good picture.
