I've always liked the idea of having shrimp in my tank. largely because they remind me of Doozers (ten points if you get the refrence) but until recently, shrimp have been little more than late night snacks for my senegal. since he's passed I think I'd like to try establishing a colony of cherry shrimp. I chose cherry shrimp because, as I understand it they're prolific and easy to breed.

My tank is pretty heavily planted but I'd like to know two things:

1: Where would I find cherry shrimp?

2: Do they have any special needs that I should know about?

I probably won't be able to implement this for another month or so after we move into our new place.

thanks

You can buy them from the classifieds here, or www.petshrimp.com . I have a feeling though your angel would do its best to eat them. If you have alot of cover, they may survive. I keep mine with gourami and they have taken off like crazy. As far as special needs, they just need very good water quality. In my main tank, I do not target feed them, they eat algea and flake that falls into my moss. In my invert tank, I feed them algae wafers and spirulina. Your loach and mollies may also have a taste for them. They do reproduce quickly and easily though.

I'd start 'em off in their own tank too, then add some bigger ones to the 30 & see what happens. (I'd also get rid of the pleco & dojo - maybe you can trade 'em for some cherries - but AFAIK, Dojos get big & like company of their own kind and plecos get way too big for a 30g).

I have been thinking of setting up a smaller tank for DPs in the future, maybe I can breed some shrimp and snails in there first, then move what I can to the 30, and add a dp or two after that. would that work?

I plan on returning the pleco to my lfs when he gets too big. as for the dojo, I'm looking for someone with a big coldwater tank or pond to give him to. His situation wouldn't be much different in the lfs whre everything is tropical.

are cherry shrimp the easiest shrimp to breed? or should I seek out an easier option?

would extra filtration be necessary/helpful in this situation.

Sorry for so many questions but I've never had shrimp last very long and my only experience is with ghost shrimp.

You need o amonnia 0 nitrites and low nitrates and any metals in the water will kill them...Esp. Copper will kill them quick.

no metals. gotcha. I plan on sticking with the low lighting in the hood and putting in some low light plants and possibly a bit of driftwood. Along with some ramshorns.. I've been successful breeding ramshorns in the past.

Is there some commercially available metal test? or is there some other way of ensuring the water is metal free?

Oh my this tank plan has changed alot since I first thought of the Zen sand garden. Though, nothing stops me from changing the deco from time to time.
