Cherry Vs. Amano

Cherry shrimp are most commonly about 1" long, the amanos are about 2".

Ghost shrimp are just scavengers, I am sure feeding them well would help but they would do what only came natural. I believe that juvenile cherries are at teh most risk and I really don't think ghost shrimp would put a big dent in a population, but its always a risk.

I had a ghostie grab one of my rummynose rasboras when I first put them in the tank and they were still scared. I had to put my hand in the tank to make him let go! I haven't seen anymore interaction between them so I think the ghostie was just taking advantage.

I've seen my ghosts eating bladder snails but never cherry shrimp. There again though, I don't watch the tank 24/7 so I can't be sure no Cherries have fallen victim to the ghosts.

I frequently see the two species side by side and the ghost leaves the cherry alone.

I've only ever witnessed the females preying on snails- and I've also noticed that the larger females tend to be the more aggressive sex by far.

Male ghosts don't appear any more aggressive to me than a cherry shrimp... they're less shy though and don't mind coming out in the open when fish are swimming nearby.

Cherries only get to like a inch maybe inch and a half. Amano's get twice the size. Many are around 2". If it's a non fish tank I would go with the cherries, they will reproduce like crazy and a half dozen will turn into 4 dozen in a few months time. Amano are more expensive but don't really breed very sucessfully. So what you buy is what you get. But if you have fish like me you might have to go with amano's because cherries are lunch for just about anything bigger than a guppy.

Some interestin points from an 'article' I read on cherry shrimp. LOL.

*They should be fed a varied diet rich in vegetable matter. It is also good to have moss or riccia in the tank so that they have a ready snack when they are hungry so they never starve. They also eat algae but there should not be algae in your tank because if so your nitrates is too high. Algae tablets/pellets for botom feeders are available at most aquariums. You can also feed them food meant for plecos (sucker/janitor fish), corydoras or crabs.

Lightning should not be on for 24hrs continously unless there is dense plantings that provide shaded areas.

At no time should any parasite killer or any kind of 'super magic cloudy water clearer' chemicals be used in any shrimp tank, especially a crystal red shrimps tank.

I am glad I have AC.

I always thought amanos got bigger than ghost shrimp. I looked at various sites and verified this. I have at least one female ghost shrimp that is about 2.5 inches long. Does that mean that my shrimp aren't actually ghost shrimp? They fit the profiles perfectly in every other way.

Also, do cherry shrimp ONLY eat algae?

I have a tank with about 100 rcs at the moment, and leave algae on the sides of the tank. There are usualy some shrimp grazing on the grass, but they never seem to make a dent in the algae. I don't mind, but I haven't found them to be a good solution for removing algae. I suppose they could be eating algae, or they could be grazing on other micro-organisma growing on the glass.

I was going to ask, what species do people here mean when they talk about ghost shrimp? is it Palaemonetes paludosus?

(Cherry shrimp will eat fish food, algae wafers, blood worms etc. etc.)

That's the kind I have- but there are quite a number of species in that Genus from what I understand.

I think I had two different species to begin with- one which lacked the red markings of the Paludosus but had blue speckling over it and had dark blue-green eggs instead of plain green eggs... I think they slowly died off and I'm left with just the usual kind now.

Both kinds were sold to me as ghost shrimp.
