Chest of Drawers as a Stand

Thanks for all the responses. Actually I would like a 2-tier stand (my 31" x 12" goes on top, and a 10 or 20 gallon at the bottom shelf), but it is kind of hard to find a wooden stand that has a 2nd shelf or a metal tube stand that exactly fits (usually 36" long).

I am looking at a metal stand for 20-29 tank in the petsmart website, but there is no pic for that particular size. If it is anything similar to the 50g stand that would be perfect. If anyone has seen that 20-29 tank, please let me know. (Petsmart is kind of far from where I am at and I don't really get a definite answer from calls and no reply by emails)

On the other hand, cinder block could be an option, but my flooring is carpet so I guess I would need to get a rug. Are there any plans online for a cinder block stand?

Thanks

I have that stand from Petsmart for my 29 gal. It works OK, but looks flimsy. My mother-in-law can't believe that it holds nearly 300 pounds of stuff! Also, the whole thing shakes (I have it in the laundry room, so whenever the washer is going, the water gets moved around). It's not too bad, though, because my fish hardly react. I still think it's a bit sketchy and may go with the cinderblock thing. That way, I could also make myself some shelves under the tank!

You really don't need any plans. You just stack them on each other. Then set a peice of 1/2 inch plywood on the top and set the tank on that. This will support the tank as all the corners are supported by the cinder blocks and wood.

 Had that stand also for my early 29gl setup. Even stuck a 15gl underneath but that 'shaky' stand made my better half so nervous we returned it for a solid weld wrought iron deal.
The cinder blocks don't really need a plan. Just stack them to desired height, I'd say1/2" to 3/4" plywood on top & place the tank. (some folks do place styrofoam sheet between tank & plywood) Good Luck

WHy not just build a stand. It is mainly some 2x4's and they tend to hold pretty well. I will see if I can find a layout for ya. I was going to make one for my 20g and I think the costs were only about $15.
If you find the layout I would like to see it as well.

I would like to have a 2-tier stand, ideally 36" long and 28"-30" high. Would these 2 "plans" work? (Not drawn to proportions. Also, ignore the number of cinder blocks as I am not sure what are the dimensions available in the market)

This one is probably not going to work.
Plan 1

The two middle column of cinder blocks move toward the middle a bit

Here's my cinder block setup:

9 cinder blocks, 3 on each end, 3 in the middle. 5 foot shelf.

Two 29's on top, 20 and a 10 gallon in the "Basement"

Cinder blocks are 8 X 8 X 16 inches, so top shelf is 24 inches high. Tight fit on top of the 20 gallon tank...

Total cost maybe $20 max.

As you can see, it's on carpet, no problems with stability. Blocks sink into carpet and pad.
