Chicken liver fed to my Oscar

well ill only add my thoughts for what its worth

if the fish can naturally catch the food your feeding it rock on but i would think fish are not meant to eat chicken

just my thoughts though

i think the bigger issue here from my point of view is that liver, especially raw, is a VERY messy food. been there, done that. it contains a lot of blood and liquid, which just fouls up your water quality rapidly, not to mention that if the fish doesn't eat the whole thing in one bite it tends to disintegrate.

if you want to continue feeding liver, which i do not see as a problem, it would be best to process it into a homemade gel food to reduce mess and increase nutritional value by adding vitamins and/or vegetables. other cheap meats would be chicken and beef hearts and beef liver. the problem with feeding land-animal meats is not the meat/protein type itself, but an excess of mammalian fats. it is the fat that the fish cannot process properly. heart and liver are both very low fat/high protein.

as far as being "natural", that's a big puddle to step in. i don't imagine my tetras would be taking down a salmon in the wild, and yet i feed them pellet food made of salmon.

Wouldn't that exclude insects from a fish's diet too then?

Lol let me rephrase then. No fur or feathers typically for most fish.

wataug's explanation is a good one I've heard from commercial breeders(fish). much like beef heart has to have the fat trimmed. the fat is not good for tropical fish.

AlanR,

Sorry to hear you feel vertically challenged. It has many positives you should take to heart - no banging you head on ceiling fixtures, easier access (also less expensive) to clothing. I have many scars to prove those statements and am only 6'3". Seriously, height in humans or growth rates in fish can be accelerated chemically but we still do not know all the consequences of it. Happily, I do not eat organ meat. The flesh we eat most likely has little or no contamination from hormones since many break down rapidly. Also, wild birds can reach full growth in 6 weeks even if it is a bit fast for chickens. Don't you just love our dollar driven society?

I know what you mean man... I'm also 6'3" and I have to admit, I've come close to knocking myself out on my shower door more than a couple times. (the rails for the door are about 6'0" high.... nails me right above the eyes every time I walk into it)

ok someone has had to much caffeine this week. Everyone needs to settle down.

lol. Cant we all just get along.

So I am just throwing in my two cents hopefully without starting WWIII.

I buy a package of unmodified (meaning no chemicals or preservatives) beefheart and beefliver. Chop it up in a blender together and put it in ice trays and top off with water then freeze. I cut it up into four pieces and feed it twice a week.

I dont think its unhealthy to feed mammalian meat to the fish at all. I do know that the protien in such meats is much more concentrated than any type of food they encounter in the wild. A human liver can only process around 60 grams of protein a day and much over that can build up toxins in the body. I can only imagine how much a fish can process. One beefheart has around 20 grams of protein. I would just keep an eye on how much you feed to them. Maybe three times a week at the most to give them a chance to completely digest. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps.

there is nothing wrong with beef heart as a source of protein..just make sure you trim away the fat.
it's the fats that can cause issues....too much of it is a bad thing ;)

as far as hormones.. in general there are too many being used and too many to make any broad statements regarding their effects.. we can leave that to any who are studying them .
remember some are hormones being used , others may be steroids(synthetic) some leave the system relatively quickly others may linger for some time(weeks).

Wow people get a grip on yourselves. all i had said in my original post was I gave my Oscar a treat of like 3 or 4 small pieces of chicken liver. I dont do it often and this was the first time I even gave him liver of any source. mainly he gets pellets of various kinds of Cichlid Hikari pellets.
Everyone went into attack mode over chicken feed and dont feed this and only feed that. OMG!! Everyone needs to calm down here.
People feed their Oscars infected with disease feeder fish and dont get this much attention.
Everyone put the caffeine down.
