Which filter would you chose for a 55 gallon cichlid tank.
1. Emperor 400
2. Rena Xp3
3. Aqua Clear 110
4. Whisper 60

Rena XP3, if you can afford it. It's really quiet and I think you will be happy with it. I like my XP1. Plus, it comes with both a nozzle and a spray bar so you can choose which one you like.

If you don't want to spend that much, I'd go for the Aquaclear, because it is more quiet, more customizable, and moves more water than the Emperor. Don't get me wrong though, the Emperor is also a great product. I've never kept up much of a maintenance schedule on mine, yet they are EXTREMELY reliable. However, I don't really like the "new" Emperor. I think the mid-level intake strainer is stupid, and I hate that they took out the little windows in the cover that let you see if your Biowheels are spinning. Plus, they raised the price another 10 bucks or so (at least, the wholesale cost that LFS's pay)!!!

There should have been a few more choices in the line up, I would go with a canister{not listed} and a large power filter {not listed}....:)

I have the XP3 on my 55 and am pleased with it. It moves a lot of water, but the fish seem to enjoy playing in the current.

You know, I'm sure the C series is cool because Marineland's filters are soo friggin' unbelievably reliable (with the exception of Penguins, they're only ok), but they seem very expensive compared to other brands. I'd like to hear some experiences with the C series, but I haven't heard of anyone that has one yet, or at least they haven't spoken up!:) Also, I wonder what is supposed to make them better than the Magnum canisters that would account for the huge price difference. The Magnums aren't my favorite, but IMO they are VERY reasonably priced.

the only one out of the above i would use is the emperor.. i'd rather use a canister not listed though.

I love my Emperor 280. :) It is the new version. You don't have to use the mid-level strainer. I can't use it in my tank because I would need about one more inch of space to make it work. The intake works fine for me dead in the middle. :)

Eventually, I will upgrade to a canister for a quieter filter. If you choose the Emperor, it will be loud when you first use it. After awhile, it quiets down to a very acceptable level.
