Cichlid ID please.

He's almost 6" long but it looks like growth is speeding up :eek:

A real character though. He killed off all the apple snails, and has drastically reduced the MTS population. You sometimes see him swimming round like a unicorn sucking on a trumpet snail shell. And he quarried the whole back of the substrate, taking out the melon sword and everything else and pushing it to the front of the tank. I rescaped it the other day hoping that with the change in scenery he might stop thinking he owns the entire tank and it seems it may have worked a bit. The little one is getting time to heal now and swims around the tank a lot more without getting bothered.
 
If you want a cichlid better suited to a 3' tank I have a few extra chanchito's on hand. I have 2 pairs (1 pair w/a fresh brood of wigglers) sharing a 30 long with L333's and BN pleco's. Also have another pair in a 29,and a single male in a different 30. For that matter, I also have a few extra BN's to move out soon. toddnbecka they sound like interesting fish. Just did some reading and they're meant to be very hardy.

But I was looking for something smaller. Blue rams seem to fit the bill and are usually good in community tanks, correct?
 
Blue rams are a peaceful enough cichlid, but not nearly as hardy in general. The breeding male isn't quite 3", and their temperament in general is quite mellow toward other fish. Obviously you can't keep 7 sexually mature fish in a 3' tank, but a single or pair is fine with tetra's or other non-cichlid species. The pair in the 29 share the tank with my plagiostoma eels and a pair of brevis (Tang shellies), while the single in the other 30 shares the tank with a school of Von Rio tetras, 5 young Burmese border loaches, and 4 L204's. (Sure, I'm biased, but I never had much luck keeping rams.)
 
I agree with toddnbecka i have never had any luck with the rams as well one thing our local water is liquid rock here.. perfect for African cichlids.. very hard and 8.0 PH..

Been playing a D2 mod for a few weeks while the bathroom got remodeled. $8.5k for a new tub/toilet/etc... I could have bought a bloody new car for what the 5'x5' walk-in closet with running water cost me. Flattened my checking account, but at least I'm supporting a few contractors in this time of financial crisis... LOL.
 
cool man well good luck with that, yeah i need to do the same thing with one of our bathrooms..
 
Wouldn't be so bad if I HAD another bathroom, but this little house only has one. The new sink had a cracked bowl, so it had to be taken back and reordered. Since the only in-stock sinks are white, it will be until 1/18 to get a replacement. I'll be shaving at the kitchen sink in the meantime, but at least the tub and toilet are functional now...
It's a real relief to have the dining room back, it was filled with contractor's tools and new fixtures for several weeks.

I gave Big Boppa to my brother who also got one of these fish from the same batch. His hasn't grown much either, just like my little one. But now the tail-less midget has taken over the tank and is beating on the dwarf gourami, who is just about knackered and looks like I'll have to put him out of his misery tonight.

So are you sure these are peaceful? Sure they're Brasiliensis? Why has only one out of three fish grown largish? Is there any other cichlid that resemble these? The camera batteries just ran out so I can't get a decent pic of him till tomorrow.
