We bought cichlid pellet food today and the first time we fed them they seemed to like it fine. But later this evening, something weird happened. the pellets seemed to disappear immediately, although we didn't see any of them eat them. In fact we saw the fish swim right past the few that remained. Then all of a sudden one of the fish spit out several ( a dozen maybe?). We saw one of the other fish grab one and then spit it out. We figured that maybe they didn't like them and then gave them a very small pinch of regular flakes and they really went for them. What's going on with the pellets? and why did the one little guy grab so many and then spit them out? This was not a cheap can of food. Any ideas?

yeah normally the fish will grab the food first in their mouth so other fish cant get it. but if they don't like the taste of the food, they will spit it out.

I bought Hai Feng Fast Color - recommended by the LFS - $10 a jar - They love the flakes and the frozen brine shrimp but seem to hate this stuff - they don't even bother to taste it anymore.

same here, mine do it all the time, i always thought they were just breaking down the food into smaller pieces of somthing.

yeah my frontosa's seem to not like pellets. they love bloodworms and brine shrimp. i also breed earthworms in my backyard and feed them that too. But i have to chop them up first coz some of them are huge worms

My mbuna do this. They kind of "chew" their food. Mine really prefer pellets or other large foods, like veggies, algae wafers, or brine shrimp. They'll eat flake if they're hungry enough, but they definitely don't like it as much.
