cichlid's in a pond

i don't know. . . after a long time of hearing (and passing) the rumor about plecos getting their eyes plucked out by african cichlids, i recently "met" an eyeless pleco. he was over 8 inches long at the time, good-sized, but that didn't stop them.

convicts will produce like rabbits aye, ok wow i have 2 ponds here where i live one is a vacation cichlid pond 500gals the other is my shubunkyn pond for goldfish around 1000gals, but we have very cold winters like the low is 5 degree so i have to pull my cichlids out in the fall before temps start to hit low 70's i have tried it a few times but unless you only get like high 60's to low 70's man you are going to have problems keeping that pond heated during winter as for the sailfin plecos i have a 120gal tang tank and i had to get rid of my pleco he was punking cichlids out even synodontis, def keep us updated here is a photo of my vacation pond were i bring my cichlids out for insect life and to stretch their fins and some breeding as well..

i have found a 1000watt heater so i figured 3 of them should heat a 300gallon pond even at the coldest of times. our winter goes from -5 to 20 degrees Celsius and our summer averages around 35 degrees Celsius so they will be fine during summer and i think the 3 heaters will cope with our winter i hope....

BTW nice setup you have there that's pretty much what i am hoping to do well a little different but same basic idea :)

pittbull also do you ever have algae problems in your pond?
does it get much sun?
do you use a filter by the looks you have a little pump there to just squirt out the fish there (nice effect)
water changes?

or do you just let it go and everything seems to work?

hey soul2008 buddy really i just let it go all spring summer and part of fall i have plants that come back and really i put parrots feathers and water hyacinth in and this acts as a vegative filter i dont water change and the rains keep up with the water i have been doing this for 6 years some i do livebearers and this year their is a ton of babies i have seen already i put some thomasi cichlids out there, there some kribs in there this year and a pretty cool spotted goodeid in there that really isnt common around here but man ol man i hate to tell you it probably wont work buddy i have tried it now an inside your home pond like this will work and honest that is what i am going to do when i get a home with a basement hey my vacation pond is in part shade and part sun wow the sun part most def gets some algae i just reach in and pull it out and its a natural look so i wouldnt write it off also provides fry with security what i do is at the end of the year before it gets too cold i drain it and get all the fish out keep what i want and trade in for alot of foods buddy this year i am donating to my local fish club..

for this to work soul2008 is that you would have to have a water pump that pumps water from your pond while pumping running the water thru a very hot heater at a constant rate to keep the whole pond heated with the water and then you would have to keep the surroundings very warm as well and condensation wow you will have to top off several times a day in the winter.. good luck buddy..

i was going to use something like this

http://www.heatingyourpond.com/submersible-heaters.html

i think one of these should work (the bigger one) in the pond then i was planning on having a small pump/filter system on it just to keep the water moving also have a see through plastic lid over it to keep birds out and heat in.
