I had a cleaner shrimp for about a week and it had a nice hiding spot and im assuming it was happy because it molted the 3rd day in the tank and was eating little pieces of raw shrimp every now and then but i went on vacation for 5 days and came back and it was dead. The temperature was at 90 degrees! my city was in the middle of a heat wave and it heated up my room which heated up my tank and killed the shrimp. the crabs and snails were fine though. Im going to go but a pair of them when my LFS gets their next order in ( which should be in the enxt couple days). Question though: do they need fish to thrive??? I no they clean parasite off fish but if there was no fish in the tank would they still live happily?? Not that im not planning to add fish or anything just wondering because i dont have any fish right at this point and was curious if this adided in the death of the shrimp.

:) Hi there. some invertebrates are more fussy to unstable water conditions. So it most probably died of oxygen starvation and increased enviromental temperature. They are certainly much happier/active when kept with fish. Mine is in physical contact with the fish most of the time. they are arogant and inquisitive creatures and loads of fun to watch. So i would say it is part be of their nature/'lifestyle' to interact with fish. Thus it would be happier with fish:)

Sorry to hear about your clown. If it got that hot and there was a lot of evaporation the SG would have shot up as well and shrimp are very sensitive to that.

I thought you had a clown and other fish? How did that carpet anemone of yours do with the temp spike?

Sorry to hear about your losses.. Its hard when you loose something.. Non-fish people don't understand how we can become attached to "fish".. I'm as attached to my fish as my cat.

Best Wishes.

the anemone didnt seem affected at all. And yes the salintiy was pretty high (1.026) so i took out about 5 gallons and replaced it with cooler fresh water. I also turned on the air conditioning in my house and within a couple hours it droped to about 82 then later went back to what it was before at 78.
