Clown Loach outgrow tank?

I think RTR hit it on the head. People are concerned with the minimum size aquarium they can put their fish in. You can keep tetras in a ten gallon, but they wont exhibit their schooling behavior until you give them a much larger tank. In my 55 gal my cardinals school and my 4 rams have plenty of space. With a 55 i don't put anything bigger than a 4" fish and this depends on the species. If i was keeping 4" rainbows i would get a 6 foot tank so they can strech their legs. I personally think that 5 clowns in a 180 would be awsome, but even then that would be crowded.

Does anyone have a picture of some moster clowns? I think that shedd's aquarium has some large specimens....

Not that this is going to change any opinions. In my 1850g I have 15 clown loach's ranging from 5 inches to 10 inches only one loach being 10 inches the others are mostly 7 to 9 inches. I have to agree with RTR that they grow very fast and can be eaisly stunted. Also what he said about worrying about minimum tank size and not really considering what size they really need, they need lots of swimming room. You dont know a fish is stressed in a small tank until you have seen them in a big tank. Have you ever seen a clown loach go up and down the side of the tank as if it is looking for a way out ,up and down, up and down , my clown loach's dont do this, dose this mean they are not stressed out I dont know. All I can say is that they seem to go about their bussiness as if nothing is wrong(just my observations) . I understand that not everyone can have a 2000g tank but if you can't house the fish, jmo but I dont think you should keep them.

Most folks say that fish cannot reach wild size in captivity, because they underhouse them and stunt them. Clowns can do as much growth in tanks as they do in the wild. Folks said the same about some Cichlids, where a number of them potentially get bigger than wild-caught, ditto for puffers. Saying that we cannot equal wild size is saying that we do not know how to keep the fish, and I do not believe that about many fish at all.

I fully agree!

those pics are nice. those clowns are huge!

ash, you have the largest gallery of large tanks that i have ever seen!!!!

hate to see your water bill!!!

You should check out RTR's tanks he has the most tanks I have ever seen. ;)
Yeah I hate to see it too, but it the electricity bill that hurts the most, especialy when you have 3 *400w and 1*1000w metal/h/lamps for your algae scrubber.

I do not want to know what the electric usage on my tanks adds to the bill. All are multi-filtered (but mostly w/Eheims which are not power hogs), and mostly multi-lighted with largely NO fluorescents. I reassure my wife that while we pay extra in summer to cool the area, we are getting waste heat from the tanks in winter...Yeah, sure.

Water is cheap compared to chemicals and meds. I run something like 700 gallons, so on the order of 300-350 gallons a week used.

Lol.... You use that excuse too.
I tell my wife that all of the oxygen produced from the plants will make for better air, I dont think she believes me though.
