i'm deciding whther to get some loaches for snail control in my tank.
are clown loaches hardy? or are they sensitive to water quality? my priority will be my plants. but thinking of adding some loaches. what would be a good number to get?

Clowns are great. I think they are hardy if taken care of properly. They are very susceptible to ick (reportedly, mine have never had it), and they are sensitive to poor water quality. IMO, they do best at higher temps and require regular, frequent, and large water changes to excel. They are not too picky about water parameters, just keep the water in good shape through changes. They also need to be in groups of at least 3, with the more the better. They need a decent amount of room as they get large and need to be kept in groups, but they do grow slowly once they reach a certain point (4"). I would recommend getting a little bit larger clowns than what you generally see, as they are more risilient as they age. 3" and above is a good size to shoot for when looking for clowns.

since they can be a little more prone to disease from what I've heard and because they get so darn BIG, you really only want to consider them if you have the tank size to keep them. There are other ways to control snails just as effectively, including other loaches who don't exceed a foot or more in length!!!

I agree with Holly. If you're only considering them for snail control, I suggest not getting them. However, if you would like to use some sort of loach to do the job instead of alternative methods, I would suggest either Botia lohachata (pakistan/yo-yo loach), or some Angelicus loaches.

I agree.

If you only plan to get a Clown loach to solve your snail problem, then I suggest you follow the ways that other people have suggested above.

I have two clown loaches and they are a hoot.

Also keep in mind that Clown Loaches can grow up to about 1 foot in length I believe. I doubt that it will ever happen in our aquariums, but they won't stay small for sure. When having Clown Loaches, it is usually suggested that you get more than one, so this can be quite a strain on smaller tanks. I have a 49G tank and I, personally, think it is too small to handle my two loaches. Also a thing you need to think about, is hiding places. A Clown Loach loves to hide in tubes, caves, where you truly can't see it anymore. Hiding behind a couple of plants won't make a Clown Loach happy.

The clownloaches that are keepted at my lfs are about 2inches thick and 9inches long.

And my clownloaches were fun to watch when i only had a pare but untill i got 4, they was playing all day swiming around.

There fun fishes il tell you that, never had any problems with my loaches yet in my 29gal.

i have a pair of clowns in my 55g and they are active all day and sleep at night. they never go and hide.

they are about inch and a half maybe
