Hi, I'm more of saltwater person, but the freshwater fish that I just have to buy is a clown loach. I planned on buying a couple for my cousin, for his 30 gallon planted aquarium. But he didn't like the idea because he is using that aquarium to breed Chrystal shrimp. I wanted to know if any of you have tried mixing clown loaches with shrimp, or if they can be together peacefully.
Thank you for reading, TheTriggerfish.

Clown Loaches need huge tanks and they grow like a foot long and require at least 75+ gallon tanks. And the shrimp could become a snack, also I believe clown loaches have different ph/softness in the water requirements seeing crystals thrive in those parameters.

Also if it is a crystal only tank it is best to leave it that way because if he plans on breeding the shrimp to their fullest potential it is best to have a shrimp only tank.

Wow thanks, looks like he is right after all. I guess I'll just get some for my tank.

Wait, how soon do you think they will get too big for a 30 gallon?

i think what you would want to do is buy the largest tank needed for the number of clown loaches to be comfortably housed at fully mature, adult size, and let them grow up in that tank. saves you from having to buy another tank down the road and go through the hassle of transferring them over. this also assures you won't have an overcrowed, overstocked tank (i have seen many times the fishkeeper 'getting a bigger tank soon' never happening). and these loaches do like to be in groups, so i would definitely get more than just two. i can't recall the minimum number but i would think that you would want at least 5 or so for them to be happy.

I have housed 4 small 1 inch clown loaches in a heavily planted red cherry shrimp tank to control an outbreak of pond snails. The shrimp population did not seem phased. The colony of 100+ has kept going strong for 2 years. I have sold twenty of mixed sizes every week from a twenty high for over a year. The loaches will be going into a 75 with 5 others in the future.

Recently housed some killie in the tank and thought they took a quick toll. Relocated them from the tank and found the shrimp population back to 100+ within a month.

Other fish that I seem to keep successfully with cherry shrimp are zebra (striata) loaches, queen (dario) loaches, yoyo loachs, chain loach and many varieties of cories.

I keep testing the waters. Cherry shrimp are in most of my planted tanks. The only tanks that I know cannot safely house them have angles.
