CO2 troubles

do the bulkhead fitting have gaskets on them??

if not you may be able dto find a material that will work for a gasket. (could even be a thin slice of CO2 tubing)

they have a nut that fits on the bottom of them. I screwed it down tight, but I couldn't get the seal between the top of the lids and the part of the fitting that is supposed to press against the lid no matter what I tried.

I always used 1/2 tsp. of yeast when I was doing DIY CO2. 1/4 will give you some gas, but won't be nearly as strong as 1/2 tsp.

Go here for fittings: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXG849&P=7
Get a few sets.....the shipping will cost you more than the fittings.:)

They always worked well for me with no leakage at all, but I never had them under much pressure. In other words, I had the tube coming out of the mixture bottle going into a power head or filter intake. If you run it into an air stone or similar you create pressure both within the bottle and between the bottle and stone or whatever is causing the back pressure. A power head causes no back pressure anywhere and actually almost sucks the gas out of the bottle. This makes for a better situation all around.
In fact, if you have soft tubing and set it up the way I just mentioned, you should be able to drill holes into the bottle tops (smaller than the tubing) and pull the tubing through the holes in the cap with a pliers and that should seal it by itself. I like the Fourmost Bulkhead Fittings, but found them unnecessary when setting up the reactor properly.

yeah, I have a red sea 500 power reactor. With the tubes going through the bottle cap lids it is working fine, but for whatever reason I couldn't get the bulkhead fittings to seal properly.

If you use good quality bottles (eg Coca Cola etc.) and carefully drill a hole in the cap, considerably smaller than the diameter of the tubing then there is absolutely no need for any type of glue (assuming you are not trying to inject the CO2 deep in the tank). Never had a problem with this method.
