My son wants to set up a tank in his bedroom, and I have found a 10G tank that would suit his limited space.

What would be an easy combination of hardy fish that could be in room temp. water that could survive small swings in temp as there is no heater in the tank? Something that a twelve year old can learn on without doing too much damage to, and without me hovering constantly to make sure they were ok?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I would get him some guppies. They can survive from 64' to 84' and your son can have some exitement when they begin to have babies.

They won't grow too big, they can have very interesting colorful markings, and can be rather tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.

I would not have thought of guppies. I thought that they needed heat, and weren't very hardy these days because of all the specified breeding. Do guppies tend to eat their babies?

platies have always worked better for me than guppies. they are a little bigger too (maxing out at about 3") so i think they look better than guppies. platies are very hardy.

platies and guppies will eat their babies. btu providing lots of places for the babies to hide will help. i have a handful of palties in a 10 gallon with marbles on the bottom instead of gravel, and lots of plants suctio cupped ot one side, so far i have 7 babies that are a little over half an inch now.

I already have a collection of platys in my 20G, and yes they are nice to look at and watch them play. Not too happy with them at the moment though, they started up a round of ick in my tank now (see other thread).

I was thinking white mountain minnows, or hillstream loach. Does anyone have any experience with these?

yeah guppies is your best choice if you want somthing nice and can stand cold weather.

I use to have 4 adult guppies and abunch of baby guppies all survive in a 10gal with out a heater in a seattle house! The water gets pretty cold compaired to my heated 30gal.

I have had great luck with zebra danios and white clouds. Rosy Barbs have done well in cooler temps and also black skirt tetras.
I have never been able to keep mollies or platies, they always come down with ick. The guppy's seem to die when they have their babies. (?) Several of mine died in labor-the fry got stuck?!
A beta would probably do well also.

white cloud minnows can handle wide range of temperatures and are hardy and colourful too.

white clouds are one of the toughest fish around...
