I didn't realize how much color this little one had until I took this picture. The yellow and green was a total surprise to me, and it looks so vibrant next to the orange. There also seems to be a tinge of lavender in there as well
After digging a few small pits over the coarse of the last week, yesterday she started a new one right up on some rocks in the middle of the tank. She spent the whole day moving substrate while the male stayed on patrol around her. By the end of the night they started defending the area fairly agressively, so I moved the other two fish out. I woke up this morning and the found that she had laid eggs overnight.
The coloring would suggest to me that her parents may have been a cross-breed or somewhere in the lineage. I have never seen any that look like that, that were 100%.
Lol, Not that I know of. Seriously, anything is possible and just because I haven't seen anything like that doesn't mean it isn't normal. But I sure don't mind doing some digging to see if I can find anything. Don't hold your breath waiting....

Pretty much all Convict Cichlids in captivity are not pure. Most have other related species mixed with them like Honduran Red Points. Wild caught Amatitlania nigrofasciata rarely get 4 inches long but here in captivity store bought males can easily reach an additional 2" in length. Most likely a result of inbreeding and hybridization.
