I am looking to get some cichlids for my 55 gal planted. I looked at some Dwarf Cichlids, but they ones I've seen are not very colorful. I don't have any other fish in my tank, just want to stock around some pretty cichlids and keep my plants nice. Would yellow labs work?? Or any other suggestions?

Like Bolivian Rams? Or german Blue Rams? The bolivian Rams I saw were pretty washed-out looking. I haven't seen any GBRs up close and personal yet.

Bolivians have better coloration than what you see in the stores, but its still more subtle than blue rams. Apistos would be another colorful option.

I would not do yellow labs in a community tank. They're one of the less aggressive malawis but still not fit to be with fish that cannot handle the aggression.

I don't have any other fish right now except for a couple of CAEs cleaning house(they will probably go elsewhere after awhile). My only real concern is the plants. Would yellow labs be OK with plants? I could build my stock list around them and I was looking at more aggressive type fish, as I love tiger barbs!

Yellow Lab's will eat plants, so will other species of mbuna. The hard, alkaline water conditions they prefer aren't suitable for most plants either. Aside from dwarf species like Ram's or Apisto's most cichlids will either eat or dig up live plants as they rearrange the tank to suit themselves.

I have pics of my German Blue Rams in my photo album on here. Their color is great. You could also look at some apistogramma's. They have all sorts of colors out there. Do a Google image search for apistogramma and you can see many of the various color patters and species.

The Double Red Cockatoos are what I want. They are gorgeous!
