I have my betta in an 8 gallon tank, planning to add a few ghost shrimp after we're cycled (and there's some waste for them to scavenge on!)... just wondering if anyone can suggest another fish. I'd really like something tiny, but probably the betta would go after it, right? I would actually like some of those Endler's live-bearers-- do you suppose Mr. Betta would try to eat them??

Otherwise, he does seem pretty contented having the place to himself (I lucked out, such a beautiful and active swimmer!)

Ok, looking forward to the replies!

Endler's have some nice fins, so I'd avoid them. Gouramis are also out for your purposes. Is the tank heated? If so I think a few pygmy cory cats would be fun. If not, maybe some White Cloud MInnows.

yep, heated tank

so that rules out white clouds I guess. :) I like the pygmy cory cat idea- will definitely keep that as a top contender.
thank you :)

The pygmy cories would be good. With bettas I like to add fish that are not in compitetion for food. All of my bettas have been slower eater than any tetras I have kept them with so they don't always get a great amount of food. Also the cories won't go after the shrimp, whereas loaches will.

Here's what's in my tank with my betta - who seems to be pretty laid back, I should mention:

4 platies (2 regular and 2 dwarf)
4 rasboras
3 zebras
1 panda cory (used to be 4, but we had some problems...)

All the fish seem to give the betta some space, but we've never had any problems.

hmm would definitely need a larger tank...

if I were going to have platies, rasboras, or danios in with my betta! I'm attracted to the idea of having teeny tiny schooling fishes (since it's an 8 gallon tank, they pretty much need to be that small!)-- ah well, can't wait to get my 40 gallon tank going (then I can have big schools of tetras!!!)--

so far, least killifish & pygmy cories are what I'm looking at. May try to tempt fate with the Endler's, but probably better to have them in my 40 gallon community tank, eh?? :)

Keep 'em coming, love the suggestions~!

My betta, although in a 2.5g is w/2 pygmi/dwarf spotted cories. They all are great in there. The betta gets his food from the top and the cories clean up the rest. Works real well.

Have fun!!

pygmies will work great! I think a pair of platies (same sex to prevent breeding) would look very colorful with the betta and i see no reason why they wouldnt fit -
