Comparing Cichlid Sizes.

I wouldn't exactly call a green terror one of the most aggressive you can pick up at the LFS. Maybe mine are weird, but its nothing to grab a jag or texas or red devil here. They are actually more available than green terrors. It took me 6 months to find a LFS with a green terror. When I could go to either of them for salvinis and what not. Besides that, the fish we call green terrors today aren't really the green terror that used to be in the hobby a few years back. Its actually a type of acara and some call it a saum. Much more docile than its predecessor. So I don't really look at them as being aggressive as much as territorial like an oscar or jack dempsey.
 
:D Aggressive cichlids? GT? Nah! I thought so too in the past until I had one. The last GT I had even ran away from my Big BP. So much for aggression.

My GT I have today, temperament is mild. Right now he just enjoy chasing my Convict. Otherwise, he just want to eat.
 
My GT seems to dislike me more than any of the fish in my tank. Whenever I put my finger on the glass or put my face near the tank at all he snaps at the glass and flares his gills. The other day he charged the glass at me and ran into it. The only agression he shows is when its feeding time and one of my other cichlids are eating "his" grub, which according to him is anything edible in the tank, heh.
 
For me, I think my GT developed a crush on me. He likes me only but no others. Haha! I guess because I'm the only who feeds him.
 
mine used to like me a lot too, but all of the sudden he changed. I think its funny though, and I am glad that he is smart enough to directly interact with me. That is the whole reason I got him was because I had read they were very owner responsive. They were right.
 
On the cichlid aggression scale. Green terrors you buy at LFS are farm bred and are only semi aggressive at best. Oscars are usually peaceful. I have seen oscars housed the tetras, danios, and small barbs with no problems. An oscar is large and if hungry enough may consume smaller fish at times, but 99.9% of the time is not aggressive what so ever. Devils on the other hand are a CA cichlid and can be frighting nasty fish. I have had devils that had to be kept alone because of their temper problems. Jags are just as common, males can be just as nasty as any devil and jags have a bad habit of taking over even large aquariums. Not to mention they are predatory and grow like a weed. As far as a aggressive cichlid that is readily available the jag has my vote. Many a newbie cichlid tank has been put into upheavel with the introduction of that cute little cichlid.

The male is close to 16". Show me the two foot Managuense and I will eat my keyboard one letter at a time....no water.

Hahaha!!! I would love to see that, MoJo eatting keyboard, but I know it will never happen because there are no 2' Jag.

However, wouldn't that be a problem, MoJo, that one day your male Dovii gets to full size and housing in that pond with other fish?
 
What about a Red Zebra? I don't know anything about this fish, (I doubt it's even a cichlid.) All I know is that we have one at the Pet Store I work at. I've watched him kill another fish, (I think a Parrot,) that was easily the same size. He's also been returned by customers twice for killing all the fish in the tank. He's about 5 inches.
