Confused

i just wanna thank everyone who helped me i went to the pet store this morning i had to return the pelco as it was the only fish whom didnt make it threw the night strangley enough i bought a air stip for the tank some declouding stuff and some stuff called cycle they gave me a chinese algae eater to replace my poor dead one and another serpae tetra for my loss go figure i went to another pet store and bought a tube ph test thingy and i have to put 5 drops in the tube with my tank water i got up every 4 hours last night and changed 20 % of my water my fish are doing great right now not at the top anymore only thing is now the 2 tetras are harrassing the fish that im not sure what it is and i have no clue where it came from i know i never bought it lol
 
Since you have a brand new tank with an algae eater in it, give him algae wafers or he will starve with no algae in there. I'm really thinking there's someone there at that store that isn't real knowledgable about fishkeeping. I never tell people to put an algae eater in a new tank...if they insist on having one anyway they don't walk away from me without being told that algae eater has to be fed something since there's nothing for him to eat in a new tank. Once you get things straightened out at that store, deal with another person there or go to another fish store in your town that has people that know what they're doing there. They shouldn't have let you walk out of there with so many fish and an algae eater to begin with, especially if they knew the tank was a new 10 gallon. Shame on them! :mad:
 
i bought algae tablets for the poor lil eater that died on me he didnt seem to like them but i put one in there for this lil chinese algae eater and he seems to love them i find myself sitting here just starring at the tank he a fas lil bugger and seems to not want other fish around him much i have a feeling im going to be switching to mostly semi- aggressive fish they all keep picking on my poor lil painted fishie and the "unknown fish "

Did you get a test to see how much Ammonia, and a test to see how much Nitrite, ans how much nitrAte??
those will help you.
these work a lot like the ph test that you got. only with a diferent number of drops.
The one you got will tell you the PH number.
thats ok.
It would be really good to know how much ammonia, and how much nitriteand how much nitrAte you have to get a different test for each one.
If you get those tests You can ask here what to do with the information you get from them.
BUT If that sounds too hard, You could just change about 1/2 of the water every day. twice a day if you like, but you dont need to get up every four hours.
after two months of that, it should be safe to change to only once a week.

Just make sure you use something to take the chlorine out of the water! and make sure it is about the same temperature as the tank water.

the declouder thing will make it so that u will need to cleanout the filter. make sure that you find out the right way to do that!
Oh Also, PLease dont buy any more fish until two months from now. the tank has to 'cycle' with what it has now. The bottle of stuff you bought SAYS it will help, but it really doesnt.

Ok, good! Just remember water changes are your friend and chlorine and ammonia are your mortal enemies...and find someone in a LFS that is going to be more helpful to you. If they ask a lot of questions about your tank and fish, don't let that bother you. They have to know this and that to give you the best fit for your tank. Write down some particulars like what kind of fish you have and so forth if you can't remember it all. The more pieces of the puzzle you have, the better.
 
thank you zazz im haveing a ball with them taking all kinds of pictures i brought a sample of my water into the LFS and the man there(who i believe knows absolutly nothing ) said that only my ph was high in my but i will go first thing again tomorrow morning and get the whole kit of tests i believe i saw one for only about 20 bucks and how often should i test my water once a day ?my husband thinks i am nuts i was reading about fish and breeds for 4 hours last night and i cried when my algae eater died i almost tried mouth to mouth but thought better of it
 
i put the stuff called cycle in my tank like the bottle instructed (
in my filter b4 the water goes in ) and then primed the pump and waited 5 minutes tested my ph it was 7.8 is this a good leval now?
 
Don't worry about pH right now. You have bigger fish to fry, hehe. Fiddling with pH using chemicals is risky even in a cycled tank. Keep the ammonia level as low as you can do partial water changes as often as you can.

I think they'll work well enough to start with and when she starts feeling more comfortable in her knowledge of what she's doing..she could go to the more reliable liquid method.
