ok. So i got this 55 gal the other day for basically free. Im tearing it down to completely reseal all the seams. I cracked the glass on one of the top corners getting the top trim off.
I have 2 options repair/patch the corner or cut all the glass and make it 3" shorter. You think a repair ( siliconed glass over crack)308F4937-F110-4808-877C-3C428031B9FE.jpegwould hold being at the very top of the glass/waterline?

Well, I'm going to say there's less pressure up high...but I still would NOT trust that crack. It'll be very hard (impossible) to trim all 4 sides past the bottom of the crack...Just bail & wait for a $1/gal tank sale & buy a new 55g or a different Craig's list/garage sale find. Spring & fall are "tank seasons"...keep your eyes open!

So the crack is 3"? Does the crack only go to the side or is the vertical thing in the middle also a crack or just dirt?

If the crack goes to the side edge only yes you can repair it by siliconing glass over the crack. If that vertical thing is a crack as well don't... it will eventually crack further and break/leak.
I would silicone a glass strip on both sides of the corner on the outside, to reduce stress on the seam.

Unless you just love the experience of doing it, it's not really worth the time, (at least mine).

For the $70 a new tank costs I wouldn't bother with that tank.

Better yet I'd get me another 40 breeder. Nicer footprint.
