I know it was stupid, but I placed my glass top on the floor while I was changing the water. Surely enough, I stepped on it and cracked it.

As you can see from the picture, it is cracked and is being held in place by the plastic molding on both sides.

Any recommendations on fixing it? The only thing I could think of was putting aquarium silicone on both sides of the crack.

As always, appreciate your help!

The integrity of it is lost. Silicone doesn't have significant holding strength so that wouldn't help. You could replace the piece of glass but you may find it costs as much as the whole cover.

Buy some type of moulding to fit both sides, it'll have to be pretty thin or have deep slips. This would give it stability and cost less than a new one. It'll still look ugly but maybe not as much.

I've done the exact same thing...twice. I'm just using mine like it is for now because all of the pieces are still in place. I plan on just replacing the whole piece. I bought it from Drs. Foster and Smith and it wasn't that expensive to begin with.

I had a similar problem. Went to Home depot to get a replacement piece cut. Ended up that they only cut plate glass and that this was made from a tempered glass with smoothed edges.

Then I called a glass shop. They could do the job, but their charge was a LOT more than buying a new top.

However, I saved the good parts of the glass top and now have an extra piece if I goof up again.

Some high end craft stores sell UV curing glass adhesive which is very strong, pretty much the same stuff they use to repair windshields. If looks aren't needed then you can also look at a Marine Grade epoxy, it will be strong enough and is often available at hardware stores. I would avoid regular epoxies as you need something that can withstand heat and moisture.

I do the same thing at least once every 2 weeks. LOL

Just call around to a few glass shops. I'm able to get either size piece for the tops to my 80 gallon replaced for less than $10 in about 2 hours.

just get a small strip of glass or hard plastic and put some silicone adhesive on it then press it down over the crack. When it dries, the broken area will not flex or move because its attached to what ever you glued to it. It wont be pretty but its cheap and it will work... although I agree to just buy a new one but if this is not your main tank and you dont care about appearances, then what I suggested will work fine.
