Today I picked up a 55gallon with stand off of craigslist for $19. I guess I was a little blinded by the price and I think i may be in over my head.

For some reason they felt the need to slather a mix of Silicone and clear packing tape all over one of the sides. I am about half way through cleaning and de-siliconing the outside of the tank. My question is if I run a bead of silicone down the outside seams and reseal the inside as well will it hold water? I have found many helpful articles, but none addressing the outside seams or the black stripping about the tank. Any help would be appreciated.

More detailed photos to come.

NO

Do not put silicone on the outside and do not put silicone over the old seal.

If you aren't prepared to strip out all the old silicone and clean it properly, then you should pass the tank on to someone who will.

There are plenty of sites on the Internet with information about refurbishing tanks. I've done many and it's not a job taken lightly.

If you got a good sturdy stand for a 55g tank for $19, you have already achieved a good success and should just top it with a nice brand new tank. Screw monkeying around with some old craphole tank. It's not worth the stress or the risk.

Silicone and packing tape on the outside of the tank sounds like maybe they were trying to fix a leak or crack.

Sketchy, at best.....

:iagree:

Thus far I have sanded and painted the stand. It seems pretty sturdy. I started cleaning up the tank, but it is such a mess I'm becoming discouraged. I have everything to reseal it, but this tank may be beyond my help. It was dark and the guy had it on the dolly outside already when I got there. I didn't get the hood or light strip either,it's sucky that I forgot to ask about such expensive assesories.

Well at least you got a 55 Gallon stand for $19.00 bucks not bad...

The black stripping around the tank you can get from www.thatfishplace.com , But it only comes in Light oak. Do a search on thier website for "55 frame". It's not easy the seal an aquarium but can be done.
